Wait is Jersey club the same thing as the Jersey Sound?
editI thought they were different?
The Jersey sound - house music subgenre. 80s/early 90s soulful female vocalist gospel-sounding house music. Also called "club music." Also was called "garage music" in the UK and was very popular there.
Jersey club - new heavily processed dance music with lots of rhymically repeated samples. Bhdshoes2 (talk) 19:50, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
- That was my impression, too! I'm not sure though, especially when you say the original Jersey sound (=garage house) was also called "club music", which suggests a continuity between the older term and the new style of Jersey club (which is a New Jersey equivalent of Baltimore Club, as it seems).
- I also think it could have made sense to integrate the old article New Jersey house into garage house (in a New Jersey subsection there), and use Jersey club just for the breakbeat/Baltimore-like style, while New Jersey sound and Jersey sound - which were common terms, as this documentary shows - should redirect to garage house as well. Or simply have two articles, one on "Jersey Sound" (which is not totally the same style as garage house in my opinion) and one on "Jersey club"? That was basically how it was before (with "New Jersey house", "garage house" and "Jersey club" as three separate articles), and I think that was a good solution. Maybe we could add a disambiguation template at the top of the two New Jersey articles? What do you think? Lupus, feel imvited to comment as well. WilhelmSchneider (talk) 21:49, 17 August 2020 (UTC)
I think Jersey club needs its own page as that almost exclusively refers to the 2010s era stuff and that 2010s era stuff is not called the Jersey sound. I think NJ house music needs its own page too-folding it under garage seems too UK centric given all the NJ festivals, fact it is a Black artform among the NJ african american community. Just a thought! Bhdshoes2 (talk) 02:39, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Thanks for the answer, but just to be clear: Garage house has nothing to do with UK garage! Garage house is the kind of house they played in New York, particularly in Larry Levan's Paradise Garage (hence the name). That's why I think this and Jersey Sound are really close (as they are geographically), although not perfectly identical, as NJ has a bit more gospel in it, while garage is more disco - from what I can tell at least). Yeah i read about that distinctiom btw UK garage and "garage music." I do think the jersey house music was more gospely back in the day thanks to Newark (not that i was there!) Bhdshoes2 (talk) 14:46, 19 August 2020 (UTC)
- Now that Jersey club and New Jersey sound are separated, I'd suggest we find a better solution for handling the articles on Garage house and New Jersey sound. I think there are two basic options: 1.) Merging this article with "Garage house", as it's more or less the same genre, with a subsection on Jersey, and a separate disambiguation page for New Jersey sound and Jersey sound, allowing now to chose between being redirected to Garage house on the one hand and Jersey club on the other; 2.) Retaining a separate article on New Jersey sound, with Jersey sound redirecting to it. My strong preference would be option 1, but I want to reach a consensus before starting the action. A response within 3 days would be great; after that I'd interpret no answers as a silent consensus and proceed. WilhelmSchneider (talk) 10:26, 14 October 2021 (UTC)
