editThank you for creating the new page. I expect this has been seen, but if not it might help clarify the D boat name and gives detail of the 1966 bronze medal rescue. http://www.mochdrenews.co.uk/subdom_hp_clone/index.php?mact=News,m73248,default,1&m73248number=3&m73248detailpage=&m73248pagenumber=2&m73248returnid=1210&page=1210 SovalValtos (talk) 12:16, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- http://news.bbc.co.uk/local/threecounties/hi/people_and_places/history/newsid_8664000/8664902.stm helps understand the naming of the boats Amy and Audrey after the sisters Lawson-Johnston. A bit off topic for direct use maybe.SovalValtos (talk) 12:31, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- To editor SovalValtos: Thanks very much for that. It was a bit of a puzzle. Tony Holkham (talk) 13:39, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- Audrey had a sister Amy who drowned according to the source. Was their mother's name also Amy? SovalValtos (talk) 13:47, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- I took the liberty of adding the above BBC ref to Sinking of the RMS Lusitania and mentioning the gift of the lifeboat. Amy Lea Pearl was Audrey's mother. Audrey also had a sister Amy who drowned in the sinking. The Audrey LJ was named after Audrey the year after she died. Tony Holkham (talk) 14:17, 16 October 2014 (UTC)

Images
editImages of Forester and Ashley as seen on http://www.newquay-westwales.co.uk/lifeboat.htm would add significantly to the page. That site were able to use them, so they might have useable copyright. Maybe the tourist information office might be able to help.SovalValtos (talk) 17:11, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- Good idea. Hope you can manage that. Tony Holkham (talk) 18:34, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- I will phone them and see how we get on. Give me time please. SovalValtos (talk) 18:47, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- I have spoken to the Tourist office, in Aberaeron, as New Quay's is closed for the winter. They could not help immediately in sourcing the images as the site http://www.newquay-westwales.co.uk is private commercial site, and not the Council's. Nonetheless they are going to try to help find them. They also gave me the names of the three local papers. Daily is the Western Mail, and weekly are Cambrian News and Tivyside Advertiser. The pics may have come from their files. She also mentioned that New Quay lifeboat station had published a book this year. 150 yrs. I will try the private site next. - The book you refer to is the one under Further reading. I'm trying to find an ISBN. Tony Holkham (talk) 09:49, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
- I have now spoken to the operations manager at the station, Roger Couch, who is keen to help. He is actually meeting with Roger Bryan, the author of the book this afternoon. RB apparently has an archive of photos, but what their copyright status is I do not know. They will reply on this talk page. The New Quay Lifeboats: One Hundred and Fifty Years of Service and Courage

Roger Bryan Published by Llanina Books 22/04/2014 (2014) ISBN 10: 0956719953 ⁄ISBN 13: 9780956719959 SovalValtos (talk) 10:21, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
- To editor SovalValtos: Good work. Roger Bryan is going to send me a copy of his book. If you'd like me to forward it to you, let me have your postal address by email. Otherwise I'll try to deal with the pics here. Tony Holkham (talk) 15:15, 17 October 2014 (UTC)
- I am not up to dealing with copyright yet. As much as I would like to see the book, I will save the expense of post, but not someones labour. Might there be a volunteer at the station who could help if you are busy>SovalValtos (talk) 02:05, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
- To editor SovalValtos: Not wanting to spend a disproportionate amount of time on this one, but when I've seen the book and discussed the contents with Roger (who has more photos) he or I could scan some and I could upload them to Commons (subject to copyright) for you to have a look as you have a better eye than I do. I'll report back here anon. Thanks for your input so far. Tony Holkham (talk) 11:04, 21 October 2014 (UTC)
- From the first edit based on Bryan, it looks like he has provided a gem of a source. I do hope that in the fullness of time an image of Forester will become available.SovalValtos (talk) 17:41, 18 November 2014 (UTC)
- It is a gem. There is no photo of Forester/Nelson in the book but there is a photo (though not a very well-lit one) of a fully-rigged scale model "Nelson 1872" courtesy of Ceredigion County Museum, Aberystwyth. The model is on loan to the New Quay Heritage Centre so I will see if I can get a copyright-free photo of the model for WP. Tony Holkham (talk) 19:44, 18 November 2014 (UTC)

Station honours
edituser:Tony Holkham I would like to suggest changing the Station Honours section to Awards, as some are personal, such as MBEs. I will not add them until the first flurry is over.SovalValtos (talk) 17:36, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- No prob with that. The first flurry is probably over as I have a number of old BNA newspaper articles to study before I add much more. Tony Holkham (talk) 18:37, 16 October 2014 (UTC)
- BNA? British Newspaper Archive? I am trying to add the MBEs, but the RNLI server is down, and that is my starting point.SovalValtos (talk) 12:03, 18 October 2014 (UTC)
- BNA = British Newspaper Archive. There is a waiting list if you want free access through WP (see Wikipedia:BNA), but worth doing - I've found it very useful. Tony Holkham (talk) 11:12, 21 October 2014 (UTC)

Station or boathouse
editIn the History section, the page currently says "An inshore lifeboat and station was added in 1967 and in 1970..." etc. The source says "In 1967 the all-weather boat was supplemented by an inshore lifeboat station, with a D-class lifeboat." My question is does it really mean New Quay Lifeboat Station became two lifeboat stations? I think not and that the source was muddling boathouses with stations. Was there a separate boathouse 1967-1992 for the ILB? SovalValtos (talk) 11:15, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- Have changed punctuation to clarify. It does seem there were two stations (boathouses) for a while until they were combined in 1992. Tony Holkham (talk) 12:13, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- I disagree that an additional boathouse implies an additional station. To my mind the station is the totality of the facilities, slipways, moorings, tractor houses and boathouses. SovalValtos (talk) 18:36, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
- No probs. Cheers... Tony Holkham (talk) 19:21, 30 October 2014 (UTC)
Coordinates
editTo editor SovalValtos: Can you help? The coordinates for this station put it out at sea. The coordinates for New Quay are correct, but when I enter them in this article it doesn't seem to work. Is there a conflict in the infobox with the x and y map locators? Baffled. Tony Holkham (Talk) 22:17, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- The page, and in particular the info box, do not respond to my usual simple changes. Therefore I will not press on and disrupt things I am ignorant of. Teahouse case? 52.213 -4.357 is appropriate for the station. I did not find the current coords out to sea, rather inland instead. Even without decent broadband I think you might find more modern computing a revelation, particularly with graphics. Please consider it. SovalValtos (talk) 22:59, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- You lost me at "modern computing", I'm afraid. Surely my 2007 iMac wouldn't place a red blob in the wrong position? Do tell me how, as I am a duffer in such things. But alas an update is not in the budget. Thanks for trying. Tony Holkham (Talk) 23:17, 11 May 2015 (UTC)
- An obvious difference with this info box is that it is using degrees minutes seconds rather than British National Grid, and the coords above the info box uses the same, degs, mins, secs rather than the decimal you usually use in that position. Perhaps if you were to substitute an info box of the type you usually add might work? I know very little about computers as well. 15 years ago, I thought I knew 5%, 10 years 0.5% and now at best 0.05% Although iMacs have a reputation for being good with graphics they do need updating regularly which you may have to do yourself if it has not yet been set to occur automatically. Display in the browser (safari?) being sensitive. If yours has not been updated recently, it might take all night with your slow connection. Do not underestimate the capabilities of computers to get things wrong, especially when they use American English! SovalValtos (talk) 08:55, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- Seems the x-y map locators are the thing. I changed those and on my screen the blob is now in the right place. The coords at the top of the page give the correct location when clicking and looking at OS. All a mystery to me, but I guess I'll learn. On the other point, I have upgraded my software as often as I can, but can't go any further without having to buy a newer version of Office for Mac. I switched to Google Chrome recently and am quite pleased with it. Tony Holkham (Talk) 09:54, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- It is not just the software that needs updating, which given yours is still supported should be fine, but more the operating system and in particular safari. That is as far as I can go. There must be a huge number of techy editors around who would like to help. Some might have enough insight into the man-machine interface to actually be helpful. I have great faith in some of the Teahouse editors. SovalValtos (talk) 10:16, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- I finally understand that it was the blob map in the info box that was the concern. Please do not underestimate the level of intelligence of us other editors, and spell things out in detail (preferably 3 times) so it penetrates at least this thick scull. SovalValtos (talk) 10:28, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
- I have only just taken on board the fact that you clearly referred to the outline map locators rather than the other two places where co-ords are used in the info box, the places which I usually edit. I have always left the blobs to your good self! My replies I can now see would have made little sense. I am going to press further at Teahouse. SovalValtos (talk) 19:11, 12 May 2015 (UTC)
