I would like to discuss about possible use of NERICA rice in transfer of genes confering resistance to abiotic stresses. There is an exciting possibility that NERICAS contain qtls for yield because they have high grain no per panicle (up to 400). Another possibility is in development of weed competetive rice varieties. Long-Term Unsuitability of Hybrids

Is any thought being given to the creation of stabilised hybrids, to be used in an open-pollinated form? Hybrid vigour is fine, but what about the long term? Even a superficial glance at history makes it absolutely clear that there will be periods of war and instability, even periods of breakdown in the international system of commerce. If seed is offered in a hybrid form, it must be produced - and, just as importantly, bought - every year. This definitely takes control of a small farmer's destiny out of his own hands and makes it impossible for him to carry on further selection for his local conditions. In an emergency, attempting to save seed will bring an immediate reversion to unsuitable parental forms. If the issue is one of food security, would it not be wise to avoid this guaranteed long-term insecurity?
