1650 dating
editRegarding the image File:Newgate_Hollar.PNG, user:Dr Sachs uploaded this saying it is of unknown date by an artist 1607-1677. But he dated it to "1650" on 10:59, 28 April 2009, but I think this date should be stated more vaguely, not specifically before the 1666 fire.
There is some controversy regarding whether statues on the gate (specifically Libertas ) existed before the fire, which crops up in Dick Whittington and his cat article. --Kiyoweap (talk) 03:23, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- This picture is a crop from a full map which has William & Mary so must be post 1689.
- Brit. Library dates it 1690 says it is derivative of an a map by Wenceslaus Hollar (d. 1677) posthumously published 1685.
- So I will amend the information accordingly. --Kiyoweap (talk) 06:25, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
- Reproduction of the full map is for sale by Online Fine Arts on Amazon,[1] and the description there states it is by John Overton (printseller) (who took over Peter Stent's business after 1665), but I'm not sure how reliable this is. The full map has Dutch writing on it (re English myl (mile) at the scale, and also circling William & Mary's portrait, etc.), so it very well may not be Overton's publication, but the aforementioned 1685 map probably might be.--Kiyoweap (talk) 16:45, 8 December 2017 (UTC)
