Name of Ukraine

edit

There may be some Ukrainians who prefer to use the definite article when referring to their country, as User:Albanman, but Wikipedia uses generally accepted grammar that is supported by a reliable source. Indeed the definite article has been used with the name Ukraine in English for many years, but this has recently changed. See Name of Ukraine#Syntax which refers to the style guides of respected magazines using the name Ukraine without the article adjective. There are certainly Ukrainian expatriates and people of Ukrainian descent who support the change. If you have some reliable source to support reversing this change, please post it here. Otherwise we should consider a consensus supports the lack of the definite article in simple references to Ukraine. --Fartherred (talk) 03:48, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

In my list of contributions, starting on the 21st of May 2010, there are over 150 instances of changing "the Ukraine" to "Ukraine". My changes have been reverted before, but so far every time that I have noticed such a reversion the change has eventually been reinstated. The definite article can precede Ukraine when both modify a following noun, such as the Ukraine national football team. We also keep the definite article with Ukraine where it appears in a quote or the title of a publication or organization. In the instances from the [[Nicholas Charnetsky]] article it seems to me there is no special circumstance for retaining the definite article. I await comment. -- Fartherred (talk) 13:00, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
User IndieRect has removed the definite articles in question. If this meets with approval, there is no more need to comment. --Fartherred (talk) 02:37, 14 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

As (had been) noted above this link should be disambiguated. There is no article about the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in general but the best article for general information about Ukrainian Orthodox churches seems to be History of Christianity in Ukraine. I will (did) change the link to reflect that. --Fartherred (talk) 04:42, 9 September 2010 (UTC) changes added --Fartherred (talk) 05:29, 9 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Birthplace

edit

Was he born in Kolomyia Raion in western Ukraine, or was this known as something else at the time of his 1884 birth? It is standard practice to denote historical geography in these places and not adjust them to modern borders. Elizium23 (talk) 13:13, 9 June 2021 (UTC)Reply
