Follower of Jesus

I have removed this article from the category "follower of Jesus", as the Gospel of John, in which Nicodemus solely appears, does not warrant this label. Nicodemus is described as a Pharisee who is on friendly terms with Jesus, has a discussion with him by night early in the latter's ministry, insists on due process in Jesus' case and assists in his burial. That does not imply that he had become a disciple - in contrast to Joseph of Arimathia who is unambiguously called a "disciple, albeit in secret".

Later, tradition considered Nicodemus a Christian, even a martyr and thus he was included among the Saints. But the same thing happened with Gamaliel too - a Pharisee who had contact of a a positive nature with Christianity. Other sources do paint a different picture: that Gamaliel lived and died a Pharisee, in fact the leading Pharisee, and brought forth a dynasty of leaders of Judaism. The difference is of course that we clearly know Gamaliel from other sources, while the identification of Nicodemus with Nicodemus ben Gurion is conjecture. So someone could paint Nicodemus according to Christian tradition and distinguish Nicodemus ben Gurion.

I am not arguing that these traditions about Nicodemus are false. But we cannot clearly see whether Nicodemus became a Christian at one point or not. The Gospels do not provide any basis for that. (So before pointing to certain Gospel verse anyone should read them first and reflect whether they are supporting what they are saying - they are not). /////////Sympathetic to Jesus and the teachings of Jesus, but Nicodemus was definately a Pharisee and a lot of other Pharisees were very Anti-Jesus. With so little to go on, I can only assume that he was trying to be diplomatic with Jesus for the benifit of the Pharisees. -Dash

January 2015 Edits to "In Popular Culture"

I fail to understand why the most recent addition to this section has a problem with inline citation. Why have no citations been provided to the other two sections?

The citation to the New York Times has nothing to do with the book written by Robert C. O'Brien and only mentions the actual entity NIMH which is completely unrelated to an article about Nicodemus and the name of characters in the book. This will be removed.

The citation to Amazon is completely unnecessary since all the necessary information about the book is provided on the Wikipedia page about Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH and is already linked. This will be removed.

The only remaining citation seems to be of any use in this context. 3lb33 (talk) 15:54, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

I agree and have fixed up your edit. (The NYT is an obituary and does mention the book as having been inspired by the researcher's work, but I didn't see it mention Nicodemus.) However, why did you add the section at all? If it's going to be there, it needs at least one reference specifically to Nicodemus the rat. Yngvadottir (talk) 17:13, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Nicodemus in Ahmadiyya Islam

I recall reading at some point that Nicodemus plays a somewhat significant role in the Ahmadiyya sect of Islam. In their account, they say that Nicodemus helped rescue Jesus from the cross and then treated his injuries (after which, the story goes, Jesus traveled to India.) I'm not knowledgeable enough on this topic to write a section on it in this article, but I think it's something worth looking into for a qualified person. If anyone knows a user who would fit that role, it might be worthwhile to reach out to them about that.

Nicodemus and Pilate conflict
