"One of his constellation is the group Pyxis named after a type of greek pottery." Deleted; Pyxis is Latin for compass, and the statement isn't relevant: there is a list below the article of the constellations he added. Ptomato 20:19, 10 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Birth Date

edit

Lacaille's birth date is given as 15 May 1713 on p. 665 in the Biographical Encyclopedia of Astronomers, Vol. 1 (Hockey, ed., 2007) and other sources. Isn't this the correct date of his birth? Doesper (talk) 04:17, 9 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

I think you want to say 15 March and not 15 May. Anyway, the date was changed on 15 march 2013 by Capester, but the reference text give only a hypothesis with conditional (ce serait donc à tort). So, i remove the change to put 15 march. You/somebody could explain by a note why le birthday is note sure, as i do in the french wikipedia here ; sorry i am not enough fluent in english to do it myself ;-( --Epsilon0 (talk) 01:12, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply
In fact i have changed the present note. --Epsilon0 (talk) 01:27, 17 September 2017 (UTC)Reply

Fifteen or fourteen constellations?

edit

The article says twice that Lacaille named 15 of the official constellations. The second time it says that, it follows the statement with a list of 14, not 15 constellations. As far as naming new constellations outright, I believe the figure 14 is correct. He also proposed breaking up the huge constellation of his day Argo Navis into three, and his catalog went part of the way to doing that. It has since been done officially, more or less according to his proposal--the new constellations being Carina, Vela, and Puppis. Taking those into account, he arguably named 17. Possible mistake

edit

The phrase "half inch" seems to be a mistake. The reference does not work. 2A00:23C7:9985:1701:5932:BA80:8A21:70FB (talk) 12:25, 18 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
