Personal Life

edit

He has been living in Los Angeles for a while now. I think that should be added. --Webbess10 (talk) 16:50, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

You are welcome to add it if you have a source. --AntiDionysius (talk) 16:55, 17 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Kenji Lopez-Alt

edit

Why do we care what Kenji Lopez-Alt thinks? Including such a comment in the article is close to original research. 142.163.195.176 (talk) 00:55, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

The quote is provided from the NPR source, which uses it as a strong example of common criticism/sentiment about Ng's accent. That such a reliable source includes it so prominently is reason enough to include it in the article. --Cerebral726 (talk) 13:39, 15 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
This is also the dumbest example of the criticism, because it is like critiquing black rappers for using the n-word, that they are perpetuating racism etc. And the articles that point that out to counter the nonsensical criticism are somehow not included in this page. 5.18.204.22 (talk) 11:58, 8 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Moreover, the Reception section of this article is limited to one person's opinion. The Reception section should either be enlarged to include actual reception of his work as a comedian, rather than single opinion on one aspect of his act, or be removed. Criticism

edit

I am interested in the line in this article reading "The accent Ng uses for the Uncle Roger character has received criticism for perpetuating negative stereotypes about Asians, and his act has been compared to a minstrel show".

That part is tagged with four sources. Not one of them makes a comparison to a minstrel show. It appears to have first been added in this 29 December 2022 revision. That drive-by edit did not add sources; it was tacked on to an existing sentence, which had some sources.

I am inclined to remove it. Google searches for '"nigel ng" "minstrel" show' and '"uncle roger" "minstrel" show' produce no evidence anyone has ever made the comparison outside this Wikipedia page, except in one Reddit post. AntiDionysius (talk) 20:23, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Obviously if I'm missing something, please re-add with the source I missed. AntiDionysius (talk) 20:29, 14 December 2023 (UTC)Reply

Former marriage confirmed

Are Nigel's collabs relevant?

edit

Rather than having an edit war with AntiDionysius, figured it's better to start a discussion.

In the past, there was a sentence on this page partially listing some of the collabs that Nigel has done, I added a few names, AntiDionysius struck the new names because they weren't sourced. After I sourced the names, AntiDionysius erased the entire collab section because he felt the section was 'not particularly notable'. I disagree.

At this stage (Feb 2024), Uncle Roger has become a crossover celeb as evidenced by routinely punching above his weight class with collabs with mainstream A-Listers such as Simu Liu, Benny Blanco, as well as the most well known food celebs such as Gordon Ramsay. Also, he has outsized impact in the food internet space -- many food youtubers / tiktokers mention Uncle Roger in their videos when they cook using methods / ingredients that Uncle Roger would approve or disapprove of (such as a wok or MSG), not to mention actual government responses already listed on the page.

***

Wikipedia is and should remain neutral, so I don't think it's appropriate in the article to directly say something like, "Uncle Roger has so much impact" because who is / should be the arbiter of that. Instead, put the facts in and then people can decide for themselves if they care to.

The facts are that Nigel has collabed with people like Benny Blanco, Simu Liu, Maria Ozawa, Gordon Ramsay, I'm sure there are other collabs I don't know about and others can / should add to the list as needed. Including these collabs is notable because it's the only place on the page which discusses the impact of the Uncle Roger character outside of the food internet space.

Re: sourcing, per WP:SELFSOURCE, self-published or questionable sources may be used as sources of information about themselves (emphasis mine), so long as the following criteria are met:

  1. The material is neither unduly self-serving nor an exceptional claim.
  2. It does not involve claims about third parties (such as people, organizations, or other entities).
  3. It does not involve claims about events not directly related to the subject.
  4. There is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity.
  5. The Wikipedia article is not based primarily on such sources.

Sourcing Nigel's collabs directly from his own youtube is wholly appropriate here, all I did was provide the link to the various collabs -- ie not unduly self-serving, no doubt about authenticity, no claims about events not directly related to subject etc.

I'll wait a couple of weeks for a response but anyone else feel free to reply / discuss whether you feel including a partial list of his collabs is or isn't noteworthy. To me, they're just as noteworthy as including the responses from various governments because they show a different (and noteworthy) aspect of the Uncle Roger character compared to everything else in the article.
