Mosaic Arts

edit

This article entirely fails to address her work in the area of mosaics. She did work during her time is Southern California such as Queen Califia's Magic Circle (see http://www.escondido.org/queen-califias-magical-circle.aspx), and all kinds of work in and around the City of San Diego (https://www.portofsandiego.org/public-art/view-the-art-directory/787-coming-together-by-niki-de-st-phalle.html and https://coolsandiegosights.wordpress.com/2014/10/05/colorful-mosaic-sculptures-near-mingei-museum/)

In addition, though the article mentions the Tarot Garden, it leaves out that this is a huge work of mosaic art! (see http://thejoyofshards.co.uk/tuscan/index.shtml)

I'm really not comfortable leaving out her contributions to mosaic art, and especially not her artistic impact in the San Diego region.

Discussion

edit

The subchapter on nanas needs some revising they are not mainly white(only her earliest ones and there is a lot of important information missing

i might try to revise over summerbreak

does anyone else have time these days to do it?

I've heard that Niki de Saint Phalle was raped by her father when she was eleven years old. She's apparently even written an article or book about it, titled "Mon Secret" ("My Secret"). Can anyone verify this?

Mon secret

edit

It was a book, published in 1994 (French language) and referenced on several biographical sites about her. It's out of print, and I can't find a copy on the net.

I was lucky enough to attend Niki in the Garden this weekend in Atlanta. Several of her man chairs are out for sitting on. La Cabeza is there, and even a Skinny.

Emphysema

edit

Niki de Saint Phalle is clearly documented as suffering from emphysema, and eventually died from it. Is there any evidence that she smoked, or was her condition largely due to exposure to fumes from the solvents and chemical resins she worked with? Reify-tech (talk) 23:14, 7 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

According to the Niki Charitable Art Foundation (NCAF), Saint Phalle was allergic to tobacco smoke for much of her life, though it is not clear whether she developed this when she first got sick, or was always sensitive to smoke. I have added this, with a reference. Reify-tech (talk) 22:17, 25 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Name

edit

Her family name is so perfect for an artist with her inclination towards visualizing the female body, the sexually explicit, giant sculptures of semi-nude women etc, that it's actually amazing that it should have been her name by birth. :) Most people probably thought it was a made-up name, a gesture of ironic defiance of the male glance, but Saint Phalle *is* an old French noble family (though not really the name of any saint...). :) 83.254.128.145 (talk) 23:08, 3 August 2019 (UTC)Reply
