Q: Niko speaks Serbian, Why isn't his nationality stated in the article??
Q: Why does it say "A war in Eastern Europe"?
Q: But Niko's nationality/the war name is obvious!
Q: But at the start of the game Niko says "What's wrong Roman, have you forgot OUR language?" and Roman replies "No cousin, it's been a while... speak English, your English is better than my Serbian" so that proves they are Serbian.

Bellic and gender gap
editPossibly related to the NYT article, this article was mentioned in a recent thesis (p. 7) as an example of WP content bias. czar 08:13, 18 January 2017 (UTC)
Tried to make a legitimate edit to the nationality section.
editBut apparently some auto-deleting bot doesn't like me. 69.131.6.96 (talk) 01:54, 9 April 2021 (UTC)

editI've been bold and added the following edit notice
Attention editors
Before you make an edit regarding nationality issues, please read the information below to prevent your edit being reverted. There is long standing consensus on this article that Niko's nationality and the war he took part in should remain as "unknown" and "a war in Eastern Europe" for the following reasons.

Niko is not Russian
editWhile the writers of GTA IV have never explicitly stated Niko's nationality and left it ambiguous intentionally, Niko states twice in the game that he is not Russian.
In the mission "Do You Have Protection?", Dmitri Rascalov thanks Niko for his help by purchasing him a weapon at the weapon shop. This mission introduces the mechanic of gun shops in the game, and upon leaving the shop, the shop owner states:
"You fucking Ruskies are milking me dry, I ain't a cow!"
to which Niko responds:
"I ain't Russian"
In the mission "Blow Your Cover" there is an Alternate Dialogue with Playboy X where Playboy asks:
"So, is you Russian or something? Is you like one of them oligarchs or some shit?"
Niko states he is not from Russia, that he's never been to Russia, and that he thinks that the Russian currency is the ruble.
I am willing to attach gameplay videos to show this dialogue, this video for the former, as well as this one for the latter. The edit I made for the article was in good faith, not that I'm assuming X201 saw otherwise. While Niko never explicitly states where he is from, he explicitly states where he is not from, and with this being from the character's source material, I don't believe this would fall under WP:OR or WP:SYN. That being said however, I am still rather new to Wikipedia contribution-wise, and am willing to learn why this may not be enough to remove the possibility that he is Russian. - @Binzy Boi: Nowhere in this article does it say that Niko is Russian. – Rhain ☔ 22:38, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- "It was believed by some that he was Russian, Serbian or Croatian"
- While the page does not state that Niko is Russian, this portion of the page refers to people's opinions of where they thought Niko was from. While it may be true that people thought Niko was Russian, if the source material says otherwise, than those opinions may not be of importance to include in the page. Binzy Boi (talk) 22:51, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
- The sentence is referring to what some people believed his nationality was, not what the game says he is. Including the in-game quote without any connection to a reliable secondary source is original research. – Rhain ☔ 22:57, 29 December 2021 (UTC)
wouldn't niko's last appearance be gta v, since you can see his lifeinvader page on Jimmy's computer as an easter egg?
editjust wondering. 2604:3D09:A47A:6500:C106:976E:3D17:CC60 (talk) 03:45, 6 May 2022 (UTC)
- No; that's an Easter egg, not a full appearance. – Rhain ☔ 09:03, 7 May 2022 (UTC)
Niko Bellic is Serbian
editAt the beginning of the game it is possible to see that Roman has difficulties speaking his native language (Serbian) when responding to a line in Serbian spoken by Niko, so after Roman's attempt to speak Serbian he mentions the Serbian language, also when playing darts Niko throws a dart with a Serbian flag, obviously the flag is not the Russian flag as it is already proven that Niko is not Russian by the game's history, so that is the proof that Niko is Serbian.
