Nikolai Ovcharov

edit

Prof. Nikolai Ovcharov is a well known Bulgarian archaeologist who discovered a unique tomb that belongs to the ancient people of Thrace in Tatul. He has made irrational claims while trying to appropriate Orpheus as a personality for Bulgaria by ignoring and outright lying about sources and historical texts referring to Orpheus. 1 He also tried to base this on a coin of Caracalla with no logical or historical base. 2 His nationalistic and weird claims were part of a diplomatic episode where he claimed "Orpheus lived in Bulgaria," Prof Nikolay Ovcharov. This was a lie of course as all sources pinpoint Orpheus birth life and death in the area of modern Greece-where once ancient Thrace and ancient Greece were- but it didn’t deter him from supporting this view. 3 His self purpose was to appropriate Orpheus against all historical data 4 to use him as a poster face for Bulgarian tourism. Orpheus will be Bulgaria's "poster face" at a tourism fair in Switzerland. He also commented negatively and judged the Discovery Channel team filming for Thracian gold and expressed his worries that rights of researchers were violated since certain discoveries maybe presented as somebody elses. 5

He has published a book; Perperikon: A Civilization of the Rock People (Hardcover) by Nikolay Ovcharov ISBN-10: 9545001402

Great aesthetics and pretty cool effects.

But regarding Orpheus his agenda remains. In "Orpheus and the Orphic tradition" all he states is that he was a Thracian from Thrace-of course-and all other aspects of his life are not mentioned. No details just generalization's, Parnassus,Pieria,Cicones & more and all and anything that could show where he lived in relation to modern and ancient geography and world is omitted.

He just wants to link him for modern Bulgaria for tourism and modern nationalism and disregard all data but his fancy..........Megistias (talk) 13:45, 20 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

It would be good to update the picture in the newly added infobox to a more recent photograph. Aia2007 (talk) 17:29, 31 July 2023 (UTC)Reply
