Botaniska Institut (sp)
editThanks for creating this article. Just a question: Creationists often claim that Nils Heribert-Nilsson was director of the Swedish Botanical Institute. I could never confirm the (former) existence of such an institution, I suppose that it's just a misunderstanding (and inflation of his real credits): most probably Heribert-Nilsson was once director of an institute at his university of Lund. Is anyone aware of any national institutions of which Heribert-Nilsson was director - and not only member (like SIFR)? DiEb (talk) 13:18, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- Can be a bad translation of the swedish word "Institution" = "Department (Academic)". -- Lavallen (talk) 16:52, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- Agree, it's probably a mistranslation of Botaniska institutionen = Department of Botany. To the best of my knowledge, there is no "Swedish Botanical Institute". And by the way, I'm the main author of the Swedish Wikipedia's List of research institutes in Sweden, which is not 100% complete, but I don't think any major governmental institute has escaped my attention. Facilities for basic botanical research have been the botanical gardens, which the universities in Lund and Uppsala have had for a very long time. As he was a plant breeder, he is actually on the border between "pure" botany, genetics and agricultural research. The "Larsson" reference mentioned him working together with Sveriges utsädesförening ("Swedish seed association") in Svalöv. This is a notable plant breeding station led for a long time by Herman Nilsson-Ehle (1879-1949), the biggest name in early 20th century Swedish plant breeding and probably Swedish genetics at large. So if he did long-term experiments it wouldn't surprise me if that's where his plants were. Tomas e (talk) 17:11, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks for the information. I wrote most parts of the article on Nils Heribert Nilsson on rationalwiki - which got a little bit snarky (in line with the nature of that wiki :-)
- I'll try to write a more level-headed paragraph on Synthetische Artbildung for this article here.
