Yucatan Crater Antipodal Point
editThe impact crater Chicxulub, Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico that is hypothesized to have brought the Jurassic Period to an end and wiped out the dinosaurs roughly 65 million years ago is an antipodal point to the Ninety East Ridge.
Chicxulub is located at 21°20'N, 89°30'W making the coordinates of its antipodal point 21°20S, 90°30E. This location is volcanic. Volcanoes are often formed at the antipodal point of massive crater impacts. Theories about the Ninety East Ridge volcanoes are still under discussion. Theories about the Chicxulub crater being the cause of their formation merits a discussion page of its own since if that is even possibly true, the Ninety East Ridge is tremendously elevated in global ecological importance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Polargirl360 (talk • contribs) 09:47, 30 October 2010 (UTC)

- Hmm, I can't claim any sort of expert-shipness in this but it sounds significant. Do you have any sources though? ResMar 23:52, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
- I looked again, and still cannot find any scholarly work in support of either the particular (Chicxulub) or general (Volcanoes are often formed) statements above. There is also some doubt as to whether the impact sites would be capable of even significantly affecting the antipode because of dissipation of the impact energy.
