Linguistic notes

edit

The sound change (breaking/fracture) whereby Proto-Germanic e became ja in Old Norse didn't affect the e that resulted from i-mutation of a. For example, with breaking of PG *e, ON hjarta : German Herz. But with with i-mutation of PG *a, ON herr : Gothic harjis. As far as I'm aware, breaking of e in Old Norse is regarded as diphthongisation rather than diaeresis. Forms with e or a in the root could be related by ablaut.
