No 22 Sqn RNZAF: Sources Vary

edit

I'm a first time contributor:

I note that the current article on No 22 Squadron RNZAF is based on RE Owen 'Official History of New Zealand in the Second World War'. Geoffrey Bentley and Maurice Conly's book <ref 'Portrait of an Air Force; the Royal New Zealand Air Force 1937-1987' Grantham House Publishing 1987 on behalf of the RNZAF Museum Trust Board> in its detailed appendix states that the squadron was formed at Norwood on 9 November 1942 (not August) as No 22 (Army Co-operation) Squadron. The commanding officers were Sqn Ldr W.A. Cameron from Nov 42 and Sqn Ldr W.L. Harrison from Mar 43. The squadron was disbanded 10 May 1943 and reformed at Ardmore on 19 June 1944 as No 22 (Fighter) Squadron. Neither the RNZAF Official History <ref Sqn Ldr J.M.S. Ross 'Royal New Zealand Air Force' in the series 'New Zealand in the Second World War'>, nor Bentley and Conly mention Wing Commander J.G. Fraser as a Commanding Officer.

I will research this further with the RNZAF Museum.

On further research, Bentley and Conly mention that Wing Commander J.G. Fraser RAF commanded No 20 (Army Co-operation) Squadron from its formation on 10 August 1942 at RNZAF Onerahi until succeeded by Flight Lieutenant F.L. Gates RAF in March 1943.
