Who did Lennon quote

edit

The article says the song references

The lyrics reference the yellow idol in J. Milton Hayes' poem The Green Eye of the Yellow God. The first stanza of the poem runs: "There's a one-eyed yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu.

However the line used in the song is "There's a little yellow idol to the north of Katmandu"

In the Goon Show episode the character Bloodnok says Well, it's a long, long story, er, I mean, I... Well, ah... There's a little yellow idol to the north of Kathmandu - http://www.thegoonshow.net/scripts_show.asp?title=s06e25_the_fear_of_wages [dead link]

So, the line in the song is a direct quote from the Goon Show so what I wrote is a more accurate account for the article because whilst it is a 'reference' to the poem it is a direct quote from the Goon Show - a radio show that John Lennon loved as a teenager.

So, the Goons are in fact the ones who referenced the poem, but they changed the quote. Lennon directly quotes the Goons.
