Talk:Nordic and Scandinavian Americans/Archives/ 1

Original research and unverified information

The statement that the median income of Scandinavian Americans is "remarkably higher than in Scandinavian countries themselves" leads to a blog which does not prove the statement made on this page [1]. The author instead compares the Swedish population with the American population in general, with a note that he will compare Swedish Americans with Sweden "in the next post," (he does not actually do this, he simply lists international rankings of median earnings, in which the US and Norway actually have a close ranking). He does not show evidence that Swedish Americans earn more than Swedes, and there is no mention of other Scandinavian/Nordic Americans compared to the Scandinavian/Nordic countries (Norwegian Americans outnumbered Swedish Americans in the 2000 census, so focusing only on Sweden is not relevant). His blog has what I would call obvious political bias, and it does not provide support for the statement made on this page. I think this is an attempt to divert traffic to his blog.Matikainen (talk) 13:29, 12 February 2011 (UTC)

Sámi immigration section

While they represent a comparatively small demographic, an article on Nordic and Scandinavian diaspora would be incomplete were it not to mention Sámi as a distinct ethnic group. The literature on Sámi Americans is admittedly very limited, but a brief summary of what exists and of the group's relation to other Nordic/Scandinavian Americans is well within the scope of this article.

I agree that the page's content on Sámi Americans should be far more condensed than what I originally added here. However, I believe that the information as it is currently presented lacks valuable context. In particular, I think the information on demographic uncertainty (reverted here) is vial to the article. It adds valuable context to the population estimate whit it proceeds. It also contextualises the other population data presented throughout the article, by admitting that some fraction of those recorded as ethic Norwegians, Swedes, and/or Finns in early American data may have in fact been Sámi who were only politically affiliated with these countries.

In short, I agree that the section on Sámi Americans should remain brief and summative, but think that it needs to be expanded from its current presentation in order not to mislead readers. Yours in good faith, Uffda608 (talk) 12:05, 21 December 2022 (UTC)
