Why is the 2nd stage referred to as the shuttle

edit

Why is the 2nd stage referred to here as the "shuttle" ? Shuttle NAR A (at astronautix) that this article seems to use, refers to booster and orbiter. Rod57 (talk) 20:43, 12 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

What is the shuttle concept

edit

When was this term introduced (pre-1970) ? Article mentions "shuttle concept" but does not explain what it is. In this context, Does it just mean reusable (and crewed?), or reusable with quick turnaround, or what ? - Rod57 (talk) 20:32, 12 February 2022 (UTC)Reply

a "shuttle" is an object which repeatedly travels back and forth between two endpoints. A light rail train carrying passengers in a large city may be referred to as a shuttle. The gadget on a weaving loom which carries thread back and forth is a shuttle. In the game of Badminton the target smacked across the net is called a shuttlecock. The Space Transportation System's orbiter is called the Space Shuttle because its job was to travel from the ground, to orbit, back to the ground, back to orbit, repeatedly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.102.146.203 (talk) 14:35, 8 June 2022 (UTC)Reply
