CDP is north of the hamlet

The lede has to identify the topic. If we do not make it clear in the lede that the hamlet & CDP do not overlap, then we have to consider having separate articles for each. Doing that would raise the possibility of having separate articles for every place where the CDP & hamlet are not co-extensive. These articles are not just about the CDP, nor just about the hamlet. They are about (adjacent/overlapping) places (on LI) that are known by that name. --JimWae (talk) 18:53, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

The lead should be able to stand alone as a concise overview of the article. It should define the topic, establish context, explain why the subject is interesting or notable, and summarize the most important points—including any notable controversies.

The lead section should briefly summarize the most important points covered in an article in such a way that it can stand on its own as a concise version of the article.

The first paragraph should define the topic without being overly specific. It should establish the context in which the topic is being considered by supplying the set of circumstances or facts that surround it.

Omitting the fact that the CDP & hamlet do not overlap would neither define nor identify the topic of the article and does not enable the lede to stand on its own. Considering the fact that hamlets have no official borders, who can you confidently state that that CDP and hamlet don't overlap? Where, precisely, are the borders of the hamlet of North Bay Shore? Can you say? Do you have any citations to bolster this claim? If they overlap, THAT would need to be demonstrated. Look at map at http://www.townofislip-ny.gov/about-islip/town-map, which shows the hamlet bordered by Sunrise HWY to the south and Southern State Pkwy to the north. Then look at the map of the CDP is which Southern State Pkwy is the southern border. Where could there be any overlap? Nobody lives close enough to the Pkwy to be in any slim area that might overlap. The CDP is north of the hamlet. One cannot say North Bay Shore "is" a hamlet and CDP. One might say, being slightly less misleading, that it is a hamlet AND it is a CDP. The name does not refer to a single area. "North Bay Shore" is the name of a CDP -- and it is the name of a hamlet that is clearly south of the CDP. The hamlet by that name and the CDP by that name do NOT refer to a single place, but to 2 adjacent places. One cannot even clearly say "It is a suburb of New York City" since the "it" would refer to two different entities as if they were a singular entity. To not point out the lack of any apparent overlap is to mislead. Omitting the fact that the CDP & hamlet are adjacent with no apparent overlap would neither define nor identify the topic of the article and does not enable the lede to stand on its own. The article is either about a loosely-defined (even inconsistently defined) unincorporated area or it is about the two non-overlapping adjacent areas with the same name. CDPs are a source for the demographic sections, but I think it is a mistake to have articles focus on the CDPs, since they are only transient statistical entities, have little or no bearing on people's lives, and many people (especially those who live in a CDP that is named differently from their post office and/or school district) have no idea of where the CDP's boundaries might be. --JimWae (talk) 08:27, 29 November 2010 (UTC)
