American Planning Association (APA) designation
editThe American Planning Association (APA) announced today [Oct. 2nd, 2007] that the North Beach Neighborhood in San Francisco has been designated as one of 10 Great Neighborhoods for 2007 through APA's Great Places in America program. APA Great Places exemplify exceptional character and highlight the role planners and planning play in creating communities of lasting value.
I've included a snippet, but the article is a good one to think about in terms of a pattern for re-writing this article. This got at least some international press; I got the notice in The Economist's monthly San Francisco briefing (not sure if everyone can access this). MrRedwood 01:36, 17 October 2007 (UTC)
Panta Rei
editHey! Nice photo! And it features Panta Rei, one of my favorite North Beach restaurants!
Thanks for adding that to the article!

Red Light District
editI don't know how to put this, but there is no red light district per se in north beach. There are some seedy areas and businesses, but nothing like a legal or tolerated red light district. Someone ought to take that mention out.
- Maybe the area referred to is the one near Broadway and Columbus? There's no prostitution or brothels, but the area is full of strip clubs and adult shops. --Yuje 10:28, August 31, 2005 (UTC)
- Yes, I think that area qualifies. Atlant 12:16, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
- " . . . reduced to those places that could afford to stay in business." This means absolutely nothing. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.147.115.53 (talk) 18:32, 12 October 2007 (UTC)
- The term Red Light implies prostitution or sexual services, and that does not happen in North Beach. It's true, there are Adult Entertainment venues such as strip clubs, but again there are no sex acts performed inside of strip clubs, only a display of nudity. The display of nudity does not qualify as a sexual service ( ie: intercourse, fellatio, etc).
- Instead of using vague inflammatory labels like Red Light, we should be using concrete descriptions so as to not present an agenda to the reader. ( example: North Beach also hosts adult entertainment venues, such as strip clubs. )James Carroll (talk) 19:29, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
storied history?
editThe history section of this article desperately needs expansion. The quote in the lead section mentions the neighborhood's storied history; but all we have now is the neighborhood's origins when the land was filled and a paragraph about its sex-related nightspots and clubs. --Sfmammamia (talk) 16:21, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
Want a New Entertainment Section?
editIMO, it would be nice to have a separate section for Entertainment, to give the article a little more structure and color. It also might be nice to have a History of Entertainment subtopic since the neighborhood had such a vivid culture in the 1950s when Phyllis Diller, Woody Allen, and other legendary comedians worked there at the Hungry I, when it was a comedy club. And there was also a substantial Jazz Scene in the 1950s when North Beach had over 15 jazz clubs.James Carroll (talk) 19:55, 14 January 2014 (UTC)
