Bethesda, North Bethesda, and Rockville

edit

Every year or two, someone suggests edits along the lines of "There is no such thing as North Bethesda. It's a false name for the southern part of Rockville or Kensington." Generally, the comments relate to conceptions of geographical prestige. Whatever your views on North Bethesda as a concept, I'd like to suggest that we keep this article -- like others on Wikipedia -- as a description of the Census-Designated Place (CDP) "North Bethesda."

If editors re-define the boundaries of Bethesda, Rockville, and North Bethesda in a way that is inconsistent with their CDPs, they are likely to create a geographical gap on Wikipedia. This is because the area in the North Bethesda CDP below the spurs of 270 (that is, the area with Lockheed-Martin, Marriott and Walter Johnson HS) is generally considered to be Bethesda proper. Since that area is not significantly covered in the Bethesda article, and in fact is outside the Bethesda CDP, it needs to be covered somewhere. Covering it here, in the CDP, is most consistent with Wikipedia's general approach. The issue of what North Bethesda is is handled neutrally and appropriately in the "Zip Codes" section of the North Bethesda article, which notes that the southern part of the CDP is 20814 and 20817, and generally considered Bethesda. It also explains how the USPS handles the area. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 96.231.162.231 (talk) 15:40, 13 December 2010 (UTC)Reply

On the same topic, the following phrase was in the header of the article, and my attempts to remove it have been undone: "Many residents of Rockville also refer to their locale as North Bethesda; however these areas are outside of the CDP and now this area is being called Bethesda North." I believe this sentiment is based on an assumption that some Rockville residents are confused about their place of residence.

Even if some Rockville residents were to exhibit such confusion, this seems an inappropriate comment for Wikipedia. This article should state the facts, not prevalent confusions.

Furthermore, Rockville residents are unlikely to be confused. Rockville, as an incorporated city and unlike a CDP, has clearly defined city limits that prevent misunderstandings about residency. As an example, all Rockville city residents are expected to pay local city taxes, and so should be confident that they live in Rockville and not North Bethesda.

I will attempt once again to remove what appears to me to be an incorrect and inappropriate statement. If you undo my revision with cause, please comment here to explain why. Landarski (talk) 15:17, 6 June 2011 (UTC)Reply

There have been a series of edits to the article to clarify that North Bethesda is not comperable to Bethesda in terms of: resident education, affluence, reputation, popularity, awesomeness, etc. These edits are not written from a neutral point of view. There may be need for a section describing the relationship between North Bethesda and Bethesda, with references as appropriate. Topics for such a section could include: naming history (it's likely recently named after Bethesda), development (it's likely a result of Bethesda suburban sprawl), and real estate (it's likely named as an attempt to artificially increase property values).

You can denigrate North Bethesda all you like, but please try to keep your edits consistent with the content and tone of the article and Wikipedia. Don't just hate; contribute. Landarski (talk) 17:13, 15 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Neighborhoods in North Bethesda

edit

I've edited the list to change "Garrett Park" to "Garrett Park Estates." Garrett Park proper is an incorporated town and is therefore not part of the North Bethesda (or any other) CDP. Garrett Park Estates, however, is unincorporated and is part of the North Bethesda CDP. Doctor Whom 23:50, 28 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

As one who grew up in Garrett Park Estates, I can confirm this to be accurate. john k 00:13, 29 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

Twinbrook Metro

edit

According to the map I am looking at, Twinbrook metro station seems to lie exactly on the border between Rockville and North Bethesda. In any case, it is obviously the station of choice for residents at the northern end of the place. nadav 09:45, 9 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

Upon examining Google Earth, it is clear that the boundary between Rockville and North Bethesda is concurrent with the Amtrak tracks there. Thus the Twinbrook station building is in Rockville, but its east exit parking and kiss & ride are in North Bethesda. These technicalites, however, are irrelavent: obviously, people who live in the northern end of North Bethesda prefer to use this station since it is the closest. This is the intended meaning of "serves the area". nadav 10:48, 28 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Map is wrong, it shows I-495, it should be I-270. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 155.178.6.10 (talk) 20:07, 22 September 2011 (UTC)Reply
