Notabliity

Someone claimed in an edit comment that the subject of the article had significant coverage in two ABC news items and one USA today item. In reality, there is significant coverage only in one ABC item. In the USA today, there is only a mention in an advert-like text box at the side. The article is about BBQ in NC in general and the North Carolina Barbecue Historic Trail, not the society. The society is not even mentioned by name in the second ABC news article, its about the dispute between the two styles.

Does NC now have a Department of Wikipedia Publicity? I am seeing an awful lot of these marginally notable articles suddenly appearing. Yworo (talk) 16:23, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

Suggested merge

Don't get me wrong, I think Barbecue in North Carolina is a notable topic, for which there is strangely no article at all. However, the society itself as well as related festivals, events, and styles would be better covered in a comprehensive article than individually. You're already behind Texas, which was done right with a Barbecue in Texas article. Y'all would do well to take that as an example and give BBQ in NC a proper centralized article which can then be added to related food and cuisine navigational templates. Also, merging North Carolina Barbecue Society and Lexington Barbecue Festival (which should really be titled under its official name) under Barbecue in North Carolina would avoid the repetition about dispute between styles, repetition about the legislation, etc., etc. More information about the North Carolina Barbecue Historic Trail could also be added, and that title redirected to the comprehensive article as well. There would be no questions about the notability of individual organizations, people, and other associations since they would be part of an obviously notable topic. Not sure about anyone else contributing, I started a couple of the articles Lexington Barbecue Festival as well as several other regional articles back in 2008. They aren't new, and I'm not from the region, I just live here now. (Ironic, but I'm from Texas). The purpose was to focus on singular topics then eventually create a larger article out of them. I'm still not done. For instance, last year the BBQ Festival had 200k visitors, in a town of 20k people. These are notable events that are covered by a large number of publications. This particular article is a weaker one, but they are quoted often enough. Unlike Texas, barbecue is actually a political issue here, with two distinct types of barbecue, eastern and Lexington. Why it is so politically charged, that is beyond me as a Texan who actually prefers Texas style, but it is. And no, I'm not affiliated with NC state in any way. If you take a look at my many thousands of edits over the last 5 years, they cover everything. I only cover NC topics more so because I live here, so access to info is a bit easier (I hear about it on the nightly news, then can look it up) AND because no one else was doing it. For instance, High Rock Lake is the second biggest lake in the state, but didn't even have an article until I started it. Just the other day I finally got Bob Timberlake (artist) into mainspace. I'm not a great author, but I try to establish enough references to demonstrate notability (sometimes, there isn't, so I never introduce the article), and provide enough information that it is useful to someone. Then I recruit or simply hope that others will make it better. Much of what I contribute is photography, simply because I have done a fair amount of it as an occupational hazard over the last past 30 years. And as to your merge, I would prefer to not merge into a non-existent article. If you want to start the article in a sandbox and get it ready for prime time, I will be happy to contribute early and often. Right now, instead of working on referencing List of nocturnal animals (my current main project) I'm having to shore up references in Pigs in the City. It's because it's political that it should be covered as a state topic, not piecemeal. For example, why is the dispute mentioned here? How is it connected directly to the NCBS? Did the NCBS intervene in the legislation? Did it favor one side over the other? What's the legislation got to do with the Society? Yworo (talk) 17:01, 27 December 2011 (UTC)

We normally keep notable festivals as articles in their own right, and there seem to be enough references here. If there is enough information to start a general article as well, there's nothing wrong with that.
