Notable people section

edit

I was unable to find a reference to cite showing the relationship between these people and North Platte: Henry Hill and Glenn MIller. Please add this information if you have it available. Thank you' --BuzyBody (talk) 01:23, 23 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

Expand Transportation

edit

I feel like we should expand the transportation section a bit as the airport is not the only type of public transport we have. We actually have a bus system surprisingly. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry and Wikipedia Editor (talk) 16:20, 3 November 2020 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for adding the bus system @Urve:! I will provide more information about the town however I'd prefer not to edit the article myself because of my relationship to the town. Blaze The Wolf | Proud Furry and Wikipedia Editor (talk) 14:40, 6 May 2021 (UTC)Reply

Expansion of History

edit

Hello! So the History section of the town is fairly short, only really covering one topic. It mentions the town's history from the Union Pacific railroad however doesn't go any further on this topic. I'm fairly sure the town has more history than just that (I live there and we have a downtown area that's rather historic), especially since it's home to the Golden Spike Tower and the largest rail yard in the world. As I've said before, because of me living in the town I would prefer to not edit it directly as it might reveal to people that I live there (This is raelly the only place I would actively say I live in the town). I can help assist in finding stuff for the history if people would like me to. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#0001 16:08, 20 September 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Blaze The Wolf The media-template I just added may interest you. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:01, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: It does. Can you link me to it? OR have you already added it to the article? ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:25, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
The article is linked in the template, but here it is again:[1]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:28, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: Holy crap. That is actually really interesting! This shows that we really need to add more to the Wikipedia page's history section. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 13:31, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Which I just shortened a bit... However, I wouldn't mind both the exodus and the canteen paragraphs being expanded to a few sentences each. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:37, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
"The question then becomes: “should it be removed or moved?”" (from the media-article) Ok, why does the question become that? Again, I'm not against expanding the section, but it was a strange question. I understand the local PR-POV, of course. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:59, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: The answer is neither. Although Jim Griffin did say this, "As a historian, you don’t want to remove something that happened, because then I am editing history. As long as it is all historically correct, it should be left there, but we should add more positive history before that. He did say that it doesn't define North Platte but Wikipedia doesn't care about whether or not an article accurately defines what people think the subject is. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:43, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
His comment was good up to "positive". If we have good sources we can add more history, "positive" or not. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:49, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång:Yes. Although I do agree with him that the history section currently focuses more on the negative parts of the history and makes brief mentions of some of the more positive parts of the history, which as I stated, while it's still part of the history, it's not the majority of North Platte's history. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:54, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I would honestly like to get into contact with either the Mayor or Jim Griffin to assist them in expanding the history section, while following Wikipedia's policies and manual of style. Obviously I"m not gonna ask them to pay me though. But I will probably have to wait and see if either of them make edits to the article. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:57, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Blaze The Wolf, since you live in the town, you could consider taking and adding a couple of more pictures. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:56, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Gråbergs Gråa Sång: I definitely will! However i would need to know what pictures would be helpful and add to the article. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 12:14, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
It's subjective, MOS:PERTINENCE has some guidance. Something mentioned in the culture section, and perhaps something just more or less decorative, there's room for it. See Ataşehir for inspiration, though that is slightly crowded IMO. There's research that indicates that a "nice" looking WP-article can be good for the local economy. ;-) Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 14:17, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Alright. I have a few ideas of pictures I could take. They'll mostly be in the downtown area since (from what I always here) it's the historic part of town, and this is actually evidenced by there being lots of buildings from a bygone era that still remain (recently the sign of a store(?) that was shut down years ago was uncovered after having been covered). I do actually have an idea of something that could be added to the arts and Entertainment section which would be the community theater (which is also located downtown). Probably would need reliable sourcing for it but I might be able to find some. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 14:28, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good to me! This [2] however, sounds like a horror-movie, literally. I saw the new Candyman recently, and this reminds me of that. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:10, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
@Blaze The Wolf Jim Griffin works here [3] (I think), you can always try. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:06, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
That's a tad far for me although I might try the listed contacts. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 20:10, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

History Section expansion

edit

Hello! So I am creating a new section to start looking more into the history of North Platte as the media source mention of said section makes a rather good point that it currently mostly talks about the Black Exodus. While this is still a part of North Platte's history and shouldn't be removed, it shouldn't be the main focus of the section (might even be WP:UNDUE). I have made mention of 2 points in North Platte's history in the template, however I"ll repeat them here.

  • The founding of the town
  • The North Platte Canteen (possibly related to what's known as the "historic" Canteen District)

There's also the possibility of mentioning North Platte's history involving the railroad, as it appears to be a major part of the town (having the largest rail yard in the world) and it also being home to an attraction called the Golden Spike Tower. ― Blaze The WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 15:03, 5 October 2021 (UTC)Reply

The History section is no longer mostly about North Platte black exodus. Not perfect, but improved. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:22, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
Noting that current refs 23 and 24 in the Historical population table needs fixing, links don't have the numbers. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 19:31, 7 October 2021 (UTC)Reply
I can't be of much help since I don't have that great a grasp on North Platte's history, aside from what I know about the black exodus. Have you considered applying for Newspapers.com through WP:TWL? That's how I found most of the information on the riot, and it will almost surely provide some information about rail yards and other features. UNL also has an archive that doesn't seem to be indexed by newspapers.com; that's here. I'll take a look when I'm more available but I hope this is somewhat helpful.
