Oral tradition vs. written history

This article should be immune to deletion. Family and Clan names are not handled in the same way other histories. They are a special case. Need for Citation

I agree that oral tradition is important but there are published references that could and should be included here. This is found in all academic texts, including those that refer to 'oral tradition'.

The Irish family name Kennedy should have an article on wikipedia and I would ask that it please not be deleted but instead modified. For example, where possible, the Four Masters could be cited since there are books containing information by them. The coat of arms can surely also be referenced. It is highly likely that for a period of time a sept of the Kennedys were a form of royalty and even if they were Gaelic Lords and not Kings, they are still part of a clan that was royal and thus such a link should be maintained.

But again I stress that citations should be included as much as possible to improve this article. Afterall there are plenty of living Kennedys who would appreciate that their real history is recorded here. Afterall there are famous examples of Kennedys already on here who either lived in Ireland or were descended from those Irish Kennedy's who settled elsewhere. "Kennedy family and JFK"

There's been an "citation needed" since 2013 statement in the intro that "The famous Kennedy family of the United States descends from them." In fact, to my knowledge little or nothing is positively known about the origins of the Kennedy family beyond that the immigrant Patrick Kennedy came from a family of farmers in Dunganstown, Wexford, and that there were a few Kennedy families of possibly unknown origins or connections in this town. It is plausible that their surname could trace to Munster Irish O'Kennedys or they could trace their origins to Ulster/Scotland Clan Kennedy. If a verified male Kennedy relative did Y DNA testing that might shed light on the question, but in the meantime without further research it is impossible to know, beyond the modern Kennedy family's recent history in Wexford. It's a controversial unsourced assertion, please do not add without a reputable source. I'm not aware that any exist. NTK (talk) 07:02, 29 March 2017 (UTC)

Here is some on my research on this question: A family tree via fathers exists on geni.com. The earliest of JFK's ancestors with reasonable biographical information is John Gilbert Kennedy, II (1740 - October 29, 1803; https://www.geni.com/people/John-Kennedy-II/6000000008027430160). All of Patrick Kennedy's male ancestors back to John Gilbert Kennedy have Dunganstown, Wexford, Ireland as birthplaces. The entry for John Gilbert's father shows his earliest date of birth as 1650 in Ireland, which is about the time Oliver Cromwell conquered Ireland. If the geni.com data are to be trusted, this makes it unlikely (although not impossible) that JFK's family descended from the Scottish clan.
