Talk:Obafemi Martins

Authenticity check: A search reveals that the phrase "regarded by many" appears in the text. Is the phrase a symptom of a dubious statement? Could a source be quoted instead? Perhaps the "many" could be identified? Might text be edited to more genuinely reflect specific facts?

He's 55 145, that's the end of it.

edit

Almost all the article seems to have been copied from [1], or could it be the other way around, beaing in mind this is a Nigerian paper and not the UK Sun? I was going to re-write the article because of this, should I go ahead??Stev17 14:04, 12 February 2007 (UTC) According to the dates it was the Newspaper which copied the Wikipedia article. But the newspaper is then used as a source to back up the claims of this article, despite the fact that the newspaper most probably lifted the information from that source.Stev17 12:29, 14 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Age Rumours

edit

During discussion surrounding Obafemi's transfer to Newcastle, rumours started to surface that instead of Obafemi being only 21 that he was actually 25 or even 26. [1] However, this rumour was confirmed as untrue by the Nigerian FA, who were the root of the rumours originally when they had a clerical error on his birth date (which stated he was born in 1978) when they first called him up to the national team eventhough his passport and Birth Certificate stated he was born in 1984. There are also rumours that Martins played with Celestine Babayaro (27) in the Nigerian youth team, this was deemed untrue though as Martins never played for the Nigerian youth team and only ever played for his hometown club FC Ebedei while in Nigeria at the age of 15. Martins is unbelievably quick, and celebrates with incredible somersaults when he scores, Surely the hallmarks of a young man. However, Martins refused to take a bone-test which would have revealed his correct date of birth and this led to people inquiring why he wouldn't take it if he isn't hiding anything.

okay i removed this section because i believe it is totally p.o.v. driven, also as this has actualy been cleared up by Newcastle, Inter and the Nigerian F.A. i believe it doesn't actually need too be in the article, Luke Out Crabman123 22:46, 13 December 2006 (UTC)Reply

This whole article is biased. Describing defenders as 'like they are standing still' is clearly partial to Martins.

It also says 'speed and pace'. The difference?...

how is it biased i guess u never seen martins play he left juve and milan defenders in his dust all year round

Martins Age

edit

Although Martins' date of birth on his passport states 28 October 1984, the website of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) said he was born on 1 May 1978.

I'm going by passport age, and someone put 1942 has it dob so i've reverted that too. Toge 10:26, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I don't think his age can properly be confronted until there is a public investigation, but looking at him, i seriously doubt he's 21. I remember when he was supposedly 18 and he looked a lot older than that. Something tells me he'll stay at Inter, if only to avoid his age being in the spot-light. Bobbyfletch85 14:46, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

I was looking at a couple of pictures of him earlier, and without knowing who he was I'm sure most people would say he's well above 21. This will also be his 7th season in Italian football which sounds a bit much for someone only a year older than Wayne Rooney.

It's only his 4th season on the first team - nothing special. Also saying he "looks" over 21 isn't verifiable and encyclopedic. Does Ole Gunnar Solskjær look like he's 32? Anyway, until the major sources (BBC, Yahoo, etc.) release a major story confirming the whole age thing (so far it's only speculation in The Sun), it should stay with the other value. ugen64 16:55, 15 August 2006 (UTC)Reply

The website was all wrong anyway, as far as ages and stats are concerned. It said stupid things like Babayaro made his debut two years before he was born. It's hardly proof he is older than what he claims.

-- Henry -- I made the following edit on the pag.e. Note to Wikipedia editors :: His current dates of birth are correct and the ones below are correct. Several people have tried to edit them (back and forth) to indicate his actual age being 26, and rumoured age to be 21, but these things are correct as is! I have since removed it and I'm putting it here... He WAS born in 1984, and the Nigerian FA sent a letter to Internazionale apologizing for the clerical error on the website... Please stop editing his age, it is fine as is! However, there should be mention of the age issue first arising when he went to play in the African Nations Cup, when the Nigerian FA sent the letter.

He will be an excellent signing for Newcastle. Champions League here we come....

James Gomez 21:41 11th June 2009 If Martins was born in 1984 how could he joined the local football club F.C. Ebedei at the age of 20 in 1999 ??? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 117.0.40.220 (talk) 14:40, 11 June 2009 (UTC)Reply

Transfer Section

edit

The transfer section needs to be removed, with the bare details held in this section regarding his move to Newcastle being incorporated into the Newcastle section.

Goals/Appearances

edit

Remember that only domestic appearances and goals are counted in the info box for football players. So his two goals last night against Levadia Tallin don't get counted. --Wikipediatastic 08:59, 29 September 2006 (UTC)Reply

Do we really need describe every goal Oba scores for Newcastle against "x" team in his biography?... It should just say he has an impressive overall scoring ratio so far, and pin-point the most significant goals. - Deathrocker 03:27, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

I agree it is getting a bit tedious, and far from encyclopaedic. Stev17 16:56, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. It was okay to describe his first few goals for Newcastle, but if every single goal he scores is going to be mentioned then it's going to end up being a very long article indeed.Bababoum 18:27, 9 March 2007 (UTC)Reply
I've done a bit, see what you think.Stev17 17:24, 11 March 2007 (UTC)Reply

Reminder - Again, it's only league goals that are counted in the info box.

Did he really have 88 appearances and 28 goals for BOTH Internazionale and Newcastle United? Seems a very strange coincidence Geess2 (talk) 20:30, 4 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

Honours

edit

Just to clarify, Martins can not be included as a part of the team that won the Intertoto Cup for Newcastle because he didn't compete in the competition, despite helping them advance to the latter stages in the UEFA Cup. Please stop adding this to his honours list. Bababoum 15:47, 8 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

International career

edit

Could a mod clean this crap up? There is a lot of accusations, as well as outrageous insulting statements, and not a single one has a source.

""Martins is one of several African players that treat national call ups with levity. "

Oh really? Like who? The two biggest African stars, Etoo and Drogba, keep getting in trouble with their club managers because they value their country over their club. Who are these mysterious "several African players" that don't like to play for their country? Why did the writer feel the need to specify "African" as if they have a reputation for this when they almost never do it compared to Europeans?

"Over the years, there have been questions about his real age - some suggesting he is actually 28 years and not 22 as he claims."

This was covered elsewhere in the article, where it turns out to be an administrative mistake.

"It has also been widely reported in the English press how he faked an injury just to skip a match between his Newcastle United side and relegated English team, Watford."

Widely reported? So you shouldn't have a problem linking to a source right?

I know i'll be banned for this, but Gamefaqs are hijacking the page: http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=313&topic=42670145

Orphaned references in Obafemi Martins

edit

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of Obafemi Martins's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Reference named "NUFC":

  • From Shay Given: "Player Profiles: Shay Given". Newcastle United. Retrieved 2008-12-22.
  • From Alan Shearer: "Profile - Alan Shearer". Newcastle United. Retrieved 2008-07-24.

I apologize if any of the above are effectively identical; I am just a simple computer program, so I can't determine whether minor differences are significant or not. AnomieBOT 22:20, 29 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Childhood Friends

edit

I removed "Amongst his childhood friends and teammates are the likes of Ifeanyi Emeghara and Stephen Makinwa" as it doesn't have a source. Feel free to add it back in once one is found.--DFS454 (talk) 12:36, 13 February 2009 (UTC)Reply
