edit@Geek65535: Tedder encouraged me to apply WP:LDR to this draft. You and Tedder seem to have both been far more involved in the draft's creation than anyone else, so I just want to check: are you also OK with WP:LDR? Thanks, Zazpot (talk) 00:01, 23 February 2019 (UTC)
@Zazpot: I'm pretty new to this, so I will definitely go with whatever y'all recommend. Geek65535 (talk) 02:20, 23 February 2019 (UTC)

I use my Raspberry Pi as a controller for my 3D printers. Using an operating system called OctoPrint, my Raspberry Pi is running almost 24 hours a day as it controls and records my 3D prints. The EVO Select does a fantastic job of running the OctoPrint software as well as having plenty of room to store the HD recordings.

Other Raspberry Pi based 3D printers include the industrial-oriented, $4,500 and up AON 3D Printer. There are also a variety of Raspberry Pi 3D printer hacking projects available, many of which use OctoPrint's RPi-compatible software.

I wrote a four-part series on 3D printing in Linux Journal called "What's New in 3D Printing", and in part four, I talk about the custom 3D printer control software called Octoprint. Octoprint includes a specific image just for Raspberry Pis, so I have another Raspberry Pi 2 B connected to my Printrbot Plus. The Octoprint server is connected to my 3D printer and also has a Raspberry Pi webcam aimed at the print bed. This means I can talk to the Octoprint Server over the network, send it print jobs and watch the results anywhere in my house

All in all, even though Cura is great for 3D printer control, I find I typically use OctoPrint for all of my 3D printing. It's just too nice to be able to start a long print and check up on it from the couch. Plus, the ability to generate time-lapse videos of your prints is hard to beat.

OctoPrint is open source, cutting edge "host software" for 3D printers. While there are other solutions to control your 3D printer and send commands such as Printrun, Repetier Host and Cura, OctoPrint is a whole different ballgame.

OctoPrint is an amazing add-on for "dumber" desktop 3D printers, as it can transform the device into a network connected, webcam-equipped, power 3D printer. It works by attaching a smart set top box to the printer's USB port and controlling its operations through fancy web interfaces.

Sources that make this pass GNG
editMany of the sources used are from fairly minor sites or even "self-published". The following, though, pass the bar as reliable sources providing some depth of coverage of Octoprint: Hackaday, ZDNet, Electronics Weekly, Linux Journal, Gizmodo, The Register. tedder (talk) 16:17, 25 February 2019 (UTC)
BQ and visual editor
editHey @Geek65535: the reason visual editor is barfing on octoprint is it thinks the link to 'es' is a translation link. I wonder if there's a better way to link to it. In the meantime, I'll just go kill the link and leave it as plain text. tedder (talk) 00:25, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
