The meaning of the word Oklahoma

edit

There appears to be some revisionism going on with this. I’ve never heard or read anywhere this Honored People defintion of the Oklahoma.

To back up this point this is a link to a Choctaw Nation owned website.

“The first Choctaw name that we must mention is "Oklahoma" itself. Following the Civil War, delegates from the 5 Civilized Tribes traveled to Washington D.C. to resume formal relationships with the US government. During the meeting, federal officials proposed the creation of an Indian Territory. Choctaw delegate Rev. Allen Wright suggested naming it "Oklahumma" (Meserve 1941:319). In the Choctaw language "okla" means "people" and "humma" means "red". Thus, the area would be named Oklahoma Territory, or literally "Territory of the Red People". Today "The State of Oklahoma" literally means "The state belonging to Red People".”

The Wayback Machine has that page being up and those words on it since October 17 2012.

Not sure why the definition of the word has suddenly been changed other than to fit someone’e false narrative the Choctaw never referred to themselves as the Red People. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.101.42.226 (talk) 02:51, 7 June 2021 (UTC)Reply

Images screwed up

edit

There are a bunch of images that are clearly meant to be in the history section, but have been pushed down into the following section because of the (uber-long) infobox about state symbols. This is undesireable, particularly as some of the maps are really important to understand what the history section is talking about. Solutions: (1) Delete the state symbols cruft-box (probably a no-go); (2) remove some of the history images and shunt the rest to the left side of the page (tends to create a bit of a WP:SANDWICH). What do others think? Furius (talk) 09:27, 10 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

OklahomaOklahoma (state) – Per WP:CONSISTENT. Conforms with New York (state). The current title can be ambiguous with Oklahoma City, as is with "New York State" and "New York City". Wikiexplorationandhelping (talk) 12:21, 24 June 2023 (UTC)Reply

Oppose per above. estar8806 (talk) 15:25, 25 June 2023 (UTC)Reply
