Dates needed

edit
There used to be a market, but this has since shut down and remains empty.

We need to know when it shut down, as well as when the line thinks is now (so "as of September 2007" would be fine). Loganberry (Talk) 14:33, 20 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

Restructuring

edit

I have done a quick restructuring to put headings to the various topics in the text. But I don't have time to re-write the main body of this article. However, I may get around to including some photos as I have a few Old Hill landmarks in mind.

I also corrected the co-ordinates to close to Holy Trinity Parish Church, as I get annoyed when things do not appear in the right place on MultiMap. -- Robert of Ramsor (talk) 21:29, 1 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

General facilities

The following paragraph may or may not be factual, however there are no sources cited. Parts read as though they are the author's own recollections and views and as such don't belong in this Wikipedia article.

In the 1940s and 1950s the High Street was very different and contained some desirable shops typical of many main streets in the Black Country at that time. Thomas' Butchers and slaughterhouse was next door to the Grand. It was a family business as most shops were and old Mrs Thomas worked tirelessly well into retirement age. Needhams was a small family grocers and was spotlessly clean. Old Guys sweetshop and tobacconist was a joy to visit. Old Mr Guy was a tiny man who stocked all the best sweets and sold ice cream cornets with chocolate sprinkles. The greengrocers on The Cross was called 'Timmies' and was completely open at the front like a market rather than a shop.

Unless supporting citations are provided this paragraph should be removed. Rupples (talk) 22:03, 15 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

Village or town?

edit

Lead describes Old Hill as a small village. Surely not. More like a small town or large village? Would "urban area" be a better description? Any views? Rupples (talk) 23:35, 16 November 2022 (UTC)Reply

"By 1934 there were 72 chain-works and chain-shops in Old Hill; almost a third of the total for Great Britain.[1]" That doesn't sound like a village. Maproom (talk) 08:34, 27 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
Many of the chain-shops were 'back garden' enterprises. 1934 isn't that relevant as we're attempting in the lead to state how Old Hill is described in reliable sources today. It's tricky because Sandwell Council sees the borough consisting of six towns, the one covering Old Hill being Rowley Regis, but I suppose their designation isn't the only source to take into account. Old Hill is joined with Cradley Heath as an electoral ward. Ordnance Survey describe Old Hill as a village: [1] Old Hill in the past did have greater importance because it was the administrative centre for Rowley Regis Urban District until 1966.
