Name controversy
editArticle should be updated to reflect recent controversy over the name, which among other things resulted in Oliver Square being renamed Unity Square. Is the City of Edmonton planning to rename the community too? 70.74.156.235 (talk) 14:05, 3 July 2022 (UTC)
Why an entire section on places of worship?
editAnd more importantly, why is that the only subsection? It seems excessive if you are not given the same level of detail to commercial & community establishments. 165.124.70.193 (talk) 18:20, 12 December 2007 (UTC)
Probably because the article is still in development.
If there is something you want to see added with respect to commerncial and community establishments, feel free to add.
That's how these Wikipedia pages grow. People who know something about a neighbourhood contribute.
As a related aside, I'm taking the paragraph somebody added on Central Tabernacle out. This church was, proir to its demolition, located in the neighbourhood of Queen Mary Park to the north and is mentioned in that article.

As you may note, I have done just what I suggested and expanded the article to include a significant section on residential development.
Cultural Activities
editIt would be great to have a section in this article on things like the Oliver Gallery Walk and related activities in the Oliver area.
Is there someone who knows more about these who would be willing to add a section?
What is the crashed car sculpture about?
editI know there’s a meaning but I don’t know what the meaning is 199.7.159.97 (talk) 20:23, 10 February 2023 (UTC)

Oliver, Edmonton → wîhkwêntôwin, Edmonton – Since January 23, 2024, the name of this neighbourhood’s community league has been changed to wîhkwêntôwin (without a capital W). This article states that although the name of the neighbourhood proper has not yet been legally changed, it also mentions that the proposed name has been approved by Edmonton’s naming committee and is expected to be voted upon soon (February 7). Further, it states that the community league has been looking for a new name since 2020.
Given this, I see no reason why the city would not go forward with the renaming. As for the article itself, wîhkwêntôwin alone may be too confusing for someone unfamiliar with Edmonton; I believe wîhkwêntôwin, Edmonton would be a better name. GriffintheFolf (talk) 21:53, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Wait. As the nomination states, the City of Edmonton hasn't even made this change yet. It also remains to be seen whether secondary sources will use the new name (likely, but Wikipedia is not a crystal ball.) Let's revisit this when the WP:COMMONNAME can be verified properly. 162 etc. (talk) 23:17, 23 January 2024 (UTC)
- Agreed. estar8806 (talk) ★ 02:19, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Not yet. And when the time comes to move, the move target should just be wîhkwêntôwin. There will be no need for the disambiguation suffix “, Edmonton”. Indefatigable (talk) 19:55, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Currently, all articles in Category:Neighbourhoods in Edmonton have the ",Edmonton" suffix, even the unambiguous ones. wîhkwêntôwin, Edmonton would follow this established precedent. 162 etc. (talk) 20:05, 24 January 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. -- Necrothesp (talk) 15:02, 30 January 2024 (UTC)

The result of the move request was: Not moved. Participants reached clear consensus against the proposed title that included the non-Latin script ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ. There is some preliminary willingness to support Wîhkwêntôwin eventually, but not for now. The overall consensus is no move. The discussion about redirect creation is outside the scope of this RM closure. (closed by non-admin page mover) Adumbrativus (talk) 07:23, 29 February 2024 (UTC)
Oliver, Edmonton → Wîhkwêntôwin ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ – The new name of Oliver has been officially announced by the City of Edmonton with a news release issued February 21, 2024 which can be found at https://myemail.constantcontact.com/News-Release---Edmonton-City-Council-approves-the-name-W-hkw-nt-win------------for-the-former-Oliver-Community.html ThisIsOwl (talk) 20:07, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- Comment for me, at least, the link to the press release requires some query params, so [1] works for me (also linked from [2]). Skynxnex (talk) 20:37, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose for now – WP:COMMONNAME, arguing WP:OFFICIALNAME isn't policy. Is the entire name used in independent secondary sources per WP:NAMECHANGES? DankJae 21:16, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose - We don't do article titles with the same name in two different scripts. When we do eventually move this article, it will have a Latin-script title without any syllabics. Indefatigable (talk) 21:32, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose until reliable secondary source usage is established, and strong oppose to the non-alphabetical, non-English "ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ". 162 etc. (talk) 23:41, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- Comment Per CTV, the name change doesn't take effect until 2025, so this is definitely premature. 162 etc. (talk) 23:44, 21 February 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose dual title 'ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ' is a different rendering of 'Wîhkwêntôwin'. I'm okay with moving it to Wîhkwêntôwin—blindlynx 00:02, 22 February 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose Wîhkwêntôwin ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ but Support just Wîhkwêntôwin, when the change does take place in 2025

- Comment whether this is moved or not, please create the relevant redirects for the new name Wîhkwêntôwin, ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ that are not being used for the article name -- 65.92.247.66 (talk) 08:47, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose creating ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ, per WP:UE: "Names not originally in a Latin alphabet (...) must be romanized." 162 etc. (talk) 17:36, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
- That is incorrect per WP:RFOREIGN Examples of appropriate non-English redirects include: Original or official names of people, places, institutions, publications or product which makes it acceptable for using Canadian syllabics as a redirect. We have a large number of such redirects in Cyrillic and Greek, etc -- 65.92.247.66 (talk) 04:18, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- Ultimately, redirects are WP:CHEAP, and ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ would probably meet WP:R#KEEP criterion 6. However, I maintain my original position that there is no expectation that the English Wikipedia can be searched by using Cree syllabics, and that this redirect is not useful. 162 etc. (talk) 16:42, 28 February 2024 (UTC)
- Support creating ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ as a redirect per 65.92.247.66

Grandin name
editThe Grandin name has been expunged from civic signage, the official naming of the LRT station, and from the school next to the station (which is now called Holy Child Catholic Elementary School). Discussion at city council makes it clear that the Grandin name as a community name for southeast Oliver has always been an informal name and not an official one. There is no official City of Edmonton documentation that I can find that uses the name.
Given the informal nature of the Grandin name and the community's desire and direction towards disassociating from the name through tangible actions (such as the removal of the mural depicting Vital-Justin Grandin) in the name of reconciliation with Indigenous peoples, what would be the most appropriate way to include the Grandin name in the article, if at all? Michael Angelo A (talk) 23:04, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
- The same way we always do: by citing reliable secondary sources. 162 etc. (talk) 23:20, 16 August 2024 (UTC)
