Bold
editEditors: yes, this article is different. It was conceived and written in the spirit of WP:Be bold, and attempts to illustrate what science can look like before it is tamed, trimmed, and neatly packaged. It necessarily must take a broad and even speculative view, because we (well, the scientists) do not yet know even what is relevant to the puzzle, and such "knowledge" as exists is inherently speculative. To some extent this article is about the development of scientific (geological) knowledge, and may thus be even more interesting and educational than a mere recital of dull, dry facts. Hopefully no one will get their shorts in a bind about this. And I thank everyone who resists the urge to jump right and start hacking away. - J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 20:52, 31 March 2010 (UTC)
- J. Johnson and others interested -- my shorts are just slightly twisted. I like the inviting approach to the reader and am not proposing any changes to the "Introduction to a puzzle" section. However the article is peppered with words that are specifically called out as tone problems in MOS:OPED (or in the same spirit): "interesting/ly" "notable/notably" and "curious/ly" each have more than five mentions. Would anybody object strongly to cleaning up these specific terms? — Brianhe (talk) 18:57, 20 August 2014 (UTC)
AWB "corrections" of duplicate references.
editAWB editors: PLEASE DO NOT "CORRECT" the duplicate references. This article intentionally uses Harvard referencing, and the merging of references messes up the numbering of the notes. - J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 21:38, 12 November 2009 (UTC)
Missing citations
editHi there, I found a probably missing citation (Reidel & Campbell 1989 in No. 16 of notes section): {cite book | series= Geologic Guidebook to Washington and Adjacent Areas | last1=Reidel | first1= S. P. | last2= Campbell | first2= N. P. |title= Structure of the Yakima Fold Belt, Central Washington | editor= Joseph, N.L. et al. | volume= Information Circular 86 | publisher= Washington State Department of Natural Resources, Division of Geology and Earth Resources |url=https://facweb.northseattle.edu/jfigge/pnwgeology/textbook%20and%20field%20guides/DNR%20Yakima%20Fold%20Belt%20Reidel%20and%20Campbell.pdf | accessdate=2018-11-22 | year=1989 | pages=277-303} Perhaps anybody could integrate this with correct tags? Regards --Vorwald (talk) 11:01, 22 November 2018 (UTC)
There may be another one (Hildebrand 2009 in section 91) {cite journal | title=Did westward subduction cause Cretaceous-Tertiary orogeny in the North American Cordillera? | last=Hildebrand | first=Robert S. | year=2009 | journal = The Geological Society of America | issue=Special Paper 257 | pages=1-73 | url=https://books.google.de/books?id=BNm12eLbQA0C&printsec=frontcover&hl=de#v=onepage&q&f=false | accessdate=2018-12-13 } --Vorwald (talk) 06:08, 13 December 2018 (UTC)
One weblink in section 94 is obsolete: http://www.colorado.edu/GeolSci/Resources/WUSTectonics/AncestralRockies/transtension.html. --Vorwald (talk) 12:17, 14 December 2018 (UTC)
One citation cannot verified by me: Cheney (2003) in section 17. --Vorwald (talk) 10:58, 17 December 2018 (UTC)
- My apologies for not previously seeing this. (Some how this page got unwatched.) I'm rather busy at the moment, but will try take a look in a couple of weeks. ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 00:04, 16 January 2019 (UTC)
- Yes. I am a bit amazed I failed to put those full citations in at the outset. Will attend to that (and perhaps a general overhaul) Real Soon Now. Thanks for bringing these discrepancies to my attention. ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 23:42, 21 January 2019 (UTC)
- Okay, everything should be fixed now. I have changed the "and others" style to the default "et al." style, and done some other cleanup. ♦ J. Johnson (JJ) (talk) 23:53, 29 January 2019 (UTC)
