Providers using OpenVZ

edit

Since there are way too many of those, please do not add link to their sites here. Such additions are against Wikipedia policies and guidelines (such as WP:EL), are actually wiki spam, and thus will be deleted ASAP.

If you are provider using OpenVZ and want to show it, there are ways — put a button on your site, and/or provide a mirror of download.openvz.org. --K001 20:28, 27 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

Background/History

edit

It might be interesting to document the background of OpenVZ ('open source' release of the commercial product Virtuozzo) the driving development team (SWsoft), the reasons for going 'open source' and who actually controls the codebase —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bertl (talkcontribs) 10:07, 18 November 2006

Nice idea, I will try to. Speaking of "who controls the codebase" — since the software is covered by GNU GPL it can not be controlled by any single entity, being it SWsoft or any other company or person. Still, SWsoft remains the major (but not the only) contributor to OpenVZ. --K001 23:18, 20 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Essay

edit

The article tries to feature virtualization in general and OpenVZ in particular and argue for their advantages, it does not describe it in an encyclopedic fashion. Wikipedia is not a soapbox (WP:NOT#SOAPBOX).

  • "you" is a forbidden word on wikipedia and an a clear indication of essay style
  • "Virtualization and isolation" contains no OpenVZ specific information.
  • "Et cetera et cetera."
  • WP:PEACOCK "resource management is of paramount importance. Really, each VE should stay within its boundaries and not affect other VEs in any way"
  • "Please note"
  • "Say, if you want to give"
  • "If you want to give your VE more disk space, you just increase its disk quota. No need to resize disk partitions etc."
  • "standard Linux process priorities and such."
  • "e.g. say that this VE is limited to, say, 10% of CPU time available."
  • "such as upgrading your server without any need to reboot it"
  • "if your database needs more memory or CPU resources, you just buy a newer better server"
  • "User-level tools": Wikipedia is not a manual page.
  • WP:WEASEL: "Indeed, some people are using OpenVZ with a single Virtual Environment. While this may seem strange"
  • "in order to apply a security update to your 10 virtual servers you have to log in into each one and run"
  • "Usage scenarios": Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information (WP:NOT#INDISCRIMINATE), such as Instruction manuals or Lists of Frequently Asked Questions.
  • "Future development": Wikipedia is not a crystal ball (WP:NOT#CRYSTALBALL)

That's only a subset of problems. You see the general issue. --Rtc 02:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

OK, got the point. Although I do not 100% agree ("Virtualization and isolation" is describing just what OpenVZ does), I now see the general direction of how the article should be cleaned up. Thanks a lot for detailed explanation. --K001 05:05, 30 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Original Research or Unverified Claims

edit

There's a new tech report from HP Labs that confirms that OpenVZ has lower overhead than Xen. http://www.hpl.hp.com/techreports/2007/HPL-2007-59.html —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 15.243.169.72 (talk) 18:39, 23 April 2007 (UTC).Reply

removed User Tools section

edit

I removed the entire section. WP:NOT a user manual, nor a HOWTO. We don't need command descriptions, nor do we need a list of caches available. Also, the phrase "so basically," is bad style and a dead giveaway that the material is wrong for WP.

There may be useful information from that section that belongs in the article, but it needs to be extracted and rewritten. Rpresser 14:22, 15 May 2007 (UTC)Reply

I wonder how that differs from http://wiki.openvz.org/Quick_installation? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 195.214.232.10 (talk) 15:42, 28 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Should MOSNUM continue to deprecate IEC prefixes?

A discussion has been started at WP:MOSNUM concerning the continued deprecation of IEC prefixes. Please comment at the MOSNUM talk page. Thunderbird2 (talk) 19:26, 5 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Does it support file descriptor passing across isolation contexts?

edit

Most unices support a mechanism to 'pass' a file descriptor through a socket. (http://archives.neohapsis.com/archives/postfix/2000-09/1476.html) For example, you might have a virus scanning daemon running as an unpriviledge user, and then to scan a file, a client can pass an open file descriptor over the socket to the virus scanning daemon. The scanning daemon can then read that file to search for viruses, even though it is running under a user that normally cannot access the file.

Does OpenVZ allow file descriptor passing of this type between security contexts?

PS- I've asked the same question about Talk:LXC, Talk:Linux-VServer and Talk:OpenVZ 128.112.139.195 (talk) 20:42, 11 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Please note that Wikipedia talk pages are for discussing *changes* to the article, and not a support forum for the product in question. (WP:TALK, WP:NOTFORUM) -- intgr [talk] 15:00, 12 November 2012 (UTC)Reply

Parts of this article read like they were written by a PR team. I tagged one such section, but on a going-forward basis I'm going to simply delete any and all value judgements written in editorial voice. 24.177.121.29 (talk) 00:01, 22 December 2012 (UTC)Reply

cgroups-based

Is OpenVZ based on cgroups like LXC, or not? User:ScotXWt@lk 16:47, 22 March 2014 (UTC)Reply
