Scope of page

edit

Typically, we do not list articles on DAB pages that contain only a portion of the DAB term in the article title. As stated in WP:Disambiguation, "Lists of articles of which the disambiguated term forms only a part of the article title don't belong here. Disambiguation pages are not search indices. Do not add links that merely contain part of the page title (where there is no significant risk of confusion)".

For that reason, I am not sure that it is helpful to include on this page references to neighbourhoods or ridings that contain the word "Ottawa" in the name. The list would quickly start to become unmanageable as it expands to cover other things like Ottawa Senators, Ottawa Hospital, Ottawa International Hockey Festival, etc., and so on. Just to clarify, I am refering to neighbourhoods, ridings, institutions, etc. that are located within a municipality or place named Ottawa. Obviously, of there was a neighbourhood named Ottawa in, say, Houston, Texas, we should consider including it. Skeezix1000 18:22, 27 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
So what you are saying is Ottawa East (a district within Ottawa, Ontario) belongs at the bottom of the article in the see also section of Ottawa, Ontario. Are you saying Ottawa East should be merged to Ottawa? Seems all good to me. However, won't that make the article really really big... I'm confused? Can you please make reference to this DAB thing? What's this portion of the DAB thing? Perhaps what they mean is terms like Ottaman or Otta? Part of the search indice? Anyway... as I said, it's all good to me if we place a link at the bottom of the article Ottawa. From what I gather, correct me if I'm wrong Otawa, Nagasaki Japan... is a term that shouldn't appear? --CyclePat 13:44, 30 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I'm not saying that there needs to be a link to Ottawa East in the See Also section of the Ottawa article -- there is already a link to the list of Ottawa neighbourhoods in that article, and I can see no reason why Ottawa East would merit special mention over any other neighbourhood. Nor do I think Ottawa and Ottawa East should be merged.

Perhaps I did not make myself clear. On DAB (disambiguation) pages, the guideline tells us to avoid listing articles where the disambiguated terms only forms a part of the article title. One of the reasons for this is to avoid making the DAB page unmanageable, because it could easily contain hundreds of article titles. Articles that contain the word "Ottawa" in the title, but relate to one of the places called Ottawa that are already on the page, need not be listed.

As for the Otawa in Japan, my own view is that a link should be included on this DAB page, once there is a Wikipedia article on the subject, because a reader searching for that article could easily misspell it as Ottawa and end up here. Skeezix1000 15:44, 10 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
