Talk:Ottoman territories in Europe

Even though the Turkish army besieged Vienna once, the Turkish Empire never actually had a common border with Austria. In between was the Kingdom of Hungary, basically devoting the whole of the nation's efforts to manning and maintaining a powerful fortress system stretching from the Mediterranean to Transylvania in the east. This became necessary since it was subjected to continuous attacks from the Turkish Empire. It can be argued that the Hapsburg-led Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation had near-complete power over the Kingdom of Hungary. However, it was never de facto part of it, although it had Hapsburg monarchs at that time. It took the role of the buffer zone between the Hapsburg and the Turkish Empires.(Koskoci (talk) 22:06, 15 March 2008 (UTC))

Merge to Rumelia

Turkey in Europe (or the wiki OR "Ottoman territories in Europe") is simply the former English title for the territories now better known as Rumelia (for better or worse, "Turkey in Europe" today would refer to Eastern Thrace, which is why wiki came up with this OR in the first place). We should simply merge the two articles at Rumelia. — LlywelynII 13:00, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Actually, checked out the Turkish article on Rumelia: while it did originally comprise all of Turkey's European holdings, after the 17th century it only corresponded to some of them. The two articles just need to be cleaned up to reflect that. — LlywelynII 13:37, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
