Article status, possible merge
editThis article's been on my watchlist for an age. As far as I can foresee, it's going nowhere. Shall we not merge it somewhere? To the main article on vodoun perhaps? QuartierLatin1968 05:07, 2 February 2006 (UTC)
Possible sources for potential overhaul
editMaking a note of these so I don't have to find them later, or so someone else can use them:
- Medicine and Morality in Haiti: The Contest for Healing Power by Paul Brodwin, Cambridge University Press, 13 Sep 1996.
- Encyclopedia of African Religion, Volume 1 by Molefi Kete Asante and Ama Mazama, SAGE, 26 Nov 2008.
- The Encyclopedia of Witches, Witchcraft and Wicca by Rosemary Guiley, Infobase Publishing, 1 Jan 2008 - Not completely sure about this one, but may or may not be useful. I've cited another Guiley work at Seven Princes of Hell, so I wouldn't say it's WP:FRINGE even if her more personal works are.
- Tell My Horse: Voodoo and Life in Haiti and Jamaica by Zora Neale Hurston, HarperCollins, 30 Dec 2008 - Even if it's from an emic perspective, Hurston's work was groundbreaking. I'm amazed Mules and Men didn't have anything.
- A Treasury of Afro-American Folklore: The Oral Literature, Traditions, Legends, Tales, Songs, Religious Beliefs, Customs, Sayings and Humor of Peoples of African Descent in the Americas by Harold Courlander, Da Capo Press, 1996.
- Anthropological Approaches to the Study of Ethnomedicine by Mark Nichter, Taylor & Francis, 1992.
- The Serpent and the Rainbow by Wade Davis, Simon and Schuster, 5 Aug 1997.
- Sacred Possessions: Vodou, Santera̕, Obeah, and the Caribbean by Margarite Fernǹdez Olmos, Rutgers University Press, 1997
- Morality: An Anthropological Perspective by Jarrett Zigon, Berg, 15 Nov 2008.
- Voodoo in Haiti: Catholicism, Protestantism & A Model of Effective Ministry in the Context of Voodoo In Haiti by Andre J. Louis, Tate Publishing, 23 Oct 2007.
- Encyclopedia of Shamanism, Volume 1 by Christina Pratt, The Rosen Publishing Group, 2007.

- I think that the Oungan page is still worth a significant edit. I only fixed some misspellings. Many Vodou terms have been spelled in different ways over the years. Even canonical texts like Métraux's "Voodoo in Haiti" (1959)--still assigned to students at the School of Ethnology at the State University of Haiti in Port-au-Prince--are not good sources for correct spelling. A lot of older spellings are based on French renderings of Haitian Creole terms. Any ways, there are great texts that have been published or reissued in the last fifteen years about Vodou in Haiti and its diaspora that could help editors rehaul this page. I think that it will be a lot of work, but worth the effort. Of the authors above, Brodwin and Hurston are respected and renowned. For direction on where to take this page, the Haitian Vodou Wikipedia page has an extensive bibliography.Kokobe1 (talk) 02:31, 27 January 2022 (UTC)
