November 2016 Wikipedia incident
editThe subject of this article is claiming credit for a recent (second) hack of User:Jimbo Wales, and of obtaining a database named "enwiki".
WP:PRIMARY source is: https://ourmine.org/news/2016/11/12/the-wikipedia-hack/
Unable to find anything about this in independent sources yet, so have not added anything to the article. -- 1Wiki8........................... (talk) 09:38, 13 November 2016 (UTC)
- I think it's a resounding "no" to add anything without reliable third party sources of the highest calibre. --Jules (Mrjulesd) 22:36, 14 November 2016 (UTC)

- It is probably best to wait until the situation on YouTube settles. Sources need to be referenced for content to be added; we should give it some time to report on the hack instead of constantly changing the article. Plus, countless channels and videos were hacked, many of them from Studio 71, and it is not possible to list them all. Many people only notice the hack on specific channels they watch, but it is not possible to cover them all in the article. Let us wait and see and come back when sources have covered the situation. —TheAnonymousNerd (talk • contribs) 03:25, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- Any information about new attacks needs to cite a professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic source -- not Tweets or Youtube vids, not the websites of those involved. Ian.thomson (talk) 04:18, 14 April 2017 (UTC)
- Thank you. I just wondered if we could put the information on Wikipedia about the April 13th attack. The OurMine thing is gone and the titles are normal again.208.114.36.245 (talk) 21:01, 15 April 2017 (UTC)

Ransom
editAn editor objected to my description of the hacking as related to ransom demands and stated that some hacker had done it but not that it was OM. I completely disagree. The Guardian was unequivocal in this: "OurMine took control of the main HBO Twitter account on Wednesday...OurMine has a history of compromising sites and Twitter accounts...It is not known how OurMine infiltrated the Twitter accounts...The hackers holding HBO to ransom after the July attack leaked further sensitive information Wednesday..." It's quite clear the Wednesday attack was carried out by OM, and the same actors had demanded ransom in July. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:12, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
- It doesn't look like a regular editor, so I'll offer a reply instead. It's clear to me that "the hackers holding HBO to ransom" are being treated as a separate entity. This is hinted at by their subhead, "TV network suffers separate breach of social media accounts", and the naming of the ransomer as "Mr Smith". The BBC goes a bit further and refers to the July hackers as "Unidentified hackers" after talking about OurMine.[1] Some like Fortune are even more explicit in saying that "OurMine targeted HBO's Twitter page and the Game of Thrones Facebook page not to ask for millions of dollars of ransom money"[2]. Clearly this is very unfortunate timing for HBO, and obviously calculated by OurMine, but to suggest that OurMine are demanding a multi-million dollar ransom is bit excessive. -- zzuuzz (talk) 21:11, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
- Okay, I'll go with that until or unless clearer documentation turns up. Thanks for doing the analysis! ☆ Bri (talk) 21:28, 17 August 2017 (UTC)
