Australia location in article
editI guarentee that the most common use of the word OZ in the world is to refer to Australia, so I have moved it.

What story is that in?--L.E./12.144.5.2/le@put.com
I believe Oz was originally satire aimed at William Jennings Bryan, the Democratic Presidential candidate in 1896, 1900, and 1908, but I see nothing about that here. Am I right on this?

"Oz" for Australia
editI don't think Oz comes directly from "Oz-tralia" but rather either from "AUS" - the international 3-letter identification code for Australia or from "Aussie" (I don't know which came first), perhaps someone would care to look into this vital matter...
- I'd agree, most of us when saying Australia wouldn't pronounce the first syllable as Oz. I always thought it derived from Aussie.
- You know I was kinda wondering about that. According to Oxford English dictionary online, the first use of the term to describe Australia was in 1902, and spelled "Oss."; this was an abbr. for South Australia, and too early, I think, to be derived either from the novel or from AUS. However the first time "Oz" is actually used to describe Australia was in 1944 -- a few years after the famous movie.
- My theory is that when the movie premier down under people noted the similarity between between the names, and it was adopted as a sort of joking reference to their own "magical" land.--Dudeman5685 (talk) 03:41, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
