PAGASAPhilippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration – This is the full title of the organization, which the acronym PAGASA stands for. According to the history,[1] it was moved from the longer title to its current one because "no one likes how long it is". Frankly, not liking something is not relevant to why MOS:ABBR was written. I feel that this page belongs at the longer title, keeping in mind that this is still an encyclopedia. Or that at least a discussion is necessary to obtain other editors' opinions on the matter. Can i ask why should WP:ABBR override WP:Common Name? The name PAGASA is used a lot more than the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, in fact per a very quick Google News search PAGASA is used 41000 times and the full title 4000 times. As a result I oppose moving it back to Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.Jason Rees (talk) 10:08, 2 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
WP:COMMONNAME mostly refers to 's-Gravenhage being at The Hague because it is used more commonly (in English) than the other not because it is an abbreviation. Also, keep in mind that in the sources it is referred to as "Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)" at least once and not just "PAGASA".Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 05:59, 3 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • I thought it should have the shortened title for the same reason as NASA has the shortened title. They're both acronyms that are pronounced as written. There is nothing wrong with writing it out here and having a redirect, but I feel given the acronym is more used, we do our readers a favor having it shortened. Department of Education (Philippines), Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology and Commission on Elections (Philippines) are also commonly referred to as DepEd, PHIVOLCS and COMELEC, respectively; and yet they rather belong there at the full title for obvious encyclopedic reasons eventhough those abbreviations are "commonly" used. Comment. @58.176.246.42: Yes, and if the ratio between those search results wasn't 1:14 (unlike 1:511 for NASA and 1:177 for FIFA) you'd have a point. WP:CONCISE rather applies to Democratic People's Republic of Korea being at North Korea. Also, I sincerely doubt that readers will only be able "recognize the name by its acronym".Raykyogrou0 (Talk) 13:05, 5 August 2015 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose as per WP:COMMONNAME and WP:ACRONYMTITLE. I see that the DepEd, PHIVOLCS and COMELEC examples were used above as a "counter". Of the three, many people arguably know what "DepEd" and "COMELEC" means, while the maning of "PHIVOLCS", like "PAGASA", is best reserved to trivia, seismology and weather buffs. It works in DepEd's and COMELEC's favor that the meanings of those two are composed of three words each, instead of PHIVOLCS and PAGASA where each letter stands for a word. (With that being said I'd be in favor of the article about PHIVOLCS being moved to that name.) See also: Meralco and EDSA (road). –HTD 22:08, 9 August 2015 (UTC)Reply

Modified "Office of Civil Defense" to refer to the Office of Civil Defense (Philippines) and not Office of Civil Defense (United States). If I am incorrect, revert the edit. Boypogikami132 (talk) 02:08, 18 November 2024 (UTC)Reply
