User:Gx25, please stop changing the "Greeklish" (English Transliteration) to Greek. This is English Wikipedia. Most visitors to these articles do not understand the Greek Alphabet, and will not be able pronounce name of the club. It's like someone going to Greek Wikipedia and changing all the English article names to their actual English...(eg. Μάντσεστερ Γιουνάιτεντ to Manchester United). I put all three Greek Greeklish and English translation so the matter is solved.

Merger proposal

edit

The two entries, PAOK and PAOK FC, are practically identical. We should keep the best of the two and merge them into one article, with the appropriate redirects. I suppose this page, i.e. PAOK FC, is the one that should stay up and the other merged into it. -The Gnome (talk) 09:28, 2 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

They shouldn't be merged. The Athletic club of PAOK is different to the the football department.MetroStar (talk) 11:11, 6 January 2009 (UTC)Reply
The texts are practically identical, though! At least, the two entries should truly be made distinct (i.e. different text for each entry) and then a direct tag added on both. The Gnome (talk) 09:50, 7 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

PAOK is a multisport team with 17 departments[1]. It is wrong to merge the main article with the football article.Sportin (talk) 11:25, 7 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Bad idea to merge. Keep them seperate and remove the tag ASAP at the top of the article suggesting a merge.Reaper7 (talk) 17:34, 8 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Should not merge. PAOK covers the history of the club, its unique social and political background while PAOK FC has to do with the football section of the club, current squad etc —Preceding unsigned comment added by 94.67.77.226 (talk) 11:24, 16 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

The current status is confusing and the comments above prove it. If the consensus is Don't Merge, then both entries must be cleaned up. One entry should be clearly about the professional football (soccer) team and corporation -- while the other should be about the other sports, i.e. basketball, etc. Perhaps we could follow the example of the entries for Barcelona's football club and their basketball club .The Gnome (talk) 12:00, 6 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Definitely Don't Merge. PAOK FC is a football club, while PAOK refers to the sports club, which contains various sports, excluding football (and also basketball and voleyball. (Allinthebrain (talk) 21:47, 11 April 2009 (UTC))Reply

Calculations of fan base

edit

I removed the unacceptable calculations about PAOK fans per the related policy. You can't add the percentages in the way that you did, because in the research we talk about a sample and not the total population. Simple maths.. - Sthenel (talk) 00:40, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Reply

PAOK F.C. finished 4th in the 2008-2009 Super League Greece

edit

It is clearly stated in the league's website[2] that the overall classification is based on play-offs' results, too, as it is also stated in the league's play-offs rules: "Με την ολοκλήρωση των αγώνων, συντάσσεται νέα κατάταξη βάσει της οποίας η ομάδα με την καλύτερη συγκομιδή καταλαμβάνει την 2η θέση στο Πρωτάθλημα της Super League και οι ομάδες που ακολουθούν καταλαμβάνουν αντίστοιχα, την 3η, 4η και 5η θέση στο Πρωτάθλημα της Super League." {in Greek[3]

Also, "according to a 2007 researchSuperLeague-sponsored market research, May 2007 in Greek, about 9% of all active Greek football fans support PAOK, with the club's strength being mainly in Thessaloniki, where support is 38%, and the rest of Northern Greece, where support is 30%."

I can clearly understand that certain people who edit this article are illiterate and don't know both how to perform simple mathematical operations (like simple sums and divisions, so as to get the percentages of PAOK's fan base) and how to read (either in Greek or in English, so as to know this team finished overall 4th and not 2nd last year). Thus, I provided countless times both the official Super League Greece 2007 survey as to each team's fan base and, in a comment, written in Greeklish {since this is a Greek team, and most editors are Greeks}, how exactly those percentages are calculated based on the survey AND in a NPOV statement the team's position in last year's regular season league classification table (2nd) and in the overall league classification table (4th).

However, I notice these things keep getting edited over time and time again so as to reflect each editor's personal views on how many fans support this team and on what its position on the overall league classification position should be. Thus, I am left with no choice but to ask for this article to be protected, if certain people don't refrain from editing yet again these two points in this article.

Furthermore, I should say that the due thing would be to edit the position of the team in the league classification table into 4th, as this was the overall and final, but, I have refrained from doing so in this team's article, or the articles of the other teams which qualified for the league's play-offs last year, stating both the regular season and the overall position in a way to keep this information NPOV. Thus, I expect the same thing to happen this year, too, regardless of which teams qualify for the play-offs.Heracletus (talk) 11:42, 13 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

I guess this year that PAOK F.C. finished second in the play-offs, the regular season position will keep disappearing, as the overall one kept disappearing last year? :P Heracletus (talk) 19:18, 12 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

I can also confirm that the final team position is the one held AFTER the playoffs. in 2008-09 PAOK was 4th and in 2009-10 PAOK was 2nd. The problem is how to present it on the page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.12.231.198 (talk) 21:46, 14 May 2010 (UTC)Reply

Section Headers - "Rennaisance" cleanup

edit

Replaced the previous headers with time periods, like 1926-1953 and so on, to separate the text more effectively. Also did some cleanup and extended the "rennaisance" section - more footnotes and references coming up. Also a lot of work needs to be done in the 1985-1996 and 2003-2007 periods.Filippos Greece (talk) 11:45, 23 February 2010 (UTC)Reply

pronounciation of the name

edit

Just a quick question. Do you pronounce each letter of the name as in "Pee Ay Oh Kay" or do you say it all as one word, like people seem to do with CSKA by pronouncing it CheSKA? Thanks. 98.102.113.194 (talk) 19:55, 13 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

reply: pronounciation of the name

edit

Correct pronunciation is "PAOK" as a single word, not by the initials. Also, using the english pronunciation for greek letters in the greek language (the greek form is Π.Α.Ο.Κ.) would be a little weird, don't you think? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Filippos Greece (talkcontribs) 11:17, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

I have said this many times, but there is no such thing as a Thessalonikian. The correct English term for someone from Thessaloniki is Thessalonian. Philly boy92 (talk) 00:29, 7 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

PAOK F.C.PAOK FC (over redirect) — I understand the desire for internal consistency between Greek football clubs, but to use dots for part of a name and then stop for the sake of consistency is going too far. Unless we're going to overhaul all Greek clubs (which I'm not advocating), this should be considered an exception to the established convention. --WFC-- 04:03, 18 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Supporters section

edit

The part about organized supporters being used by politicians seems highly speculative, unless some citation is given it should propably be deleted or rephrased. 138.246.2.73 (talk) 20:25, 17 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

Cleanup of recent history

edit

The last part of the history section included such phrases as "epic win" and "thrilling comeback". I cleaned up the language and tried to make the section more coherent.

Also, I think we need some citation on the Europa League money lost and the amount of money invested by Savvidis. 85.72.76.137 (talk) 17:32, 6 July 2013 (UTC)Reply

PAOK F.C.PAOK FC — Most sources refer to PAOK FC, not PAOK F.C. (see their Official website and UEFA page). 18:32, 25 May 2014 (UTC).

  • Oppose - as unnecessary. There is no clear consensus on this and it is my understanding that either is acceptable. Some people say that as an abbreviation it should have the ".", others not. Please also see the other RM above this. Fenix down (talk) 09:28, 26 May 2014 (UTC)Reply
  • Support I agree that the punctuation is unnecessary and that either is acceptable, so why include it? WP:CONCISE supports this argument, though I admit it's a fairly trivial matter either way. --BDD (talk) 18:01, 2 June 2014 (UTC)Reply

All information needs to be cited by independent, reliable sources. Unreferenced material (especially that previously tagged) should not be added without sources. Sentences and paragraphs should not be amended to include information not included at the source. 'Weasel words' should not be added (e.g. to headings) if not cited. Added important events in PAOK FC History

edit

Hello. I made an effort to write down important events in PAOK FC history that were not included in the article. For example 1)Koudas 2-year absence that fueled Olympiacos-PAOK rivalry 2)All the Greek Cup Finals 3)1972-73 season, Olympiacos-PAOK game with referee Fakis and 3-5 shock defeat by Panachaiki 3)1976-77 season 4)1979-80 PAOK-Panathinaikos match with referee Litsas that ended a 62-game unbeaten home record 5)Death of Lorant at Toumba Stadium 6)1987-88 season, 6-1 win over Olympiacos and matches with Napoli that followed next season 7)All the important events of Voulinos era 8)2009-10 season, Aris-PAOK game with referee Spathas 9)2017-18 eventful season with 2 matches decided by court decision (i wrote down only the events, not assumptions) etc. My intention was to write everything down from a neutral point of view and not from a devoted PAOK fan point of view. For example, i wrote down that after PAOK-Panathinaikos 0-0 in 1976-77 season there was huge disappointment for team performance which did not meet expectations. I also wrote down that in 2016-17 Greek Cup PAOK scored a controversial second goal with Pedro Henrique who was in an offside position. I also suggest that some parts must be shortened. For example, i believe that parts for 1971-72 and 1973-74 Greek Cup titles are too big. Of course, many seasons of the team that ended with a mid-table finish were not included. As for PAOK managers, i believe that managers like Skocik, Bajevic should be mentioned because they won titles but the article can be shortened if some of them are excluded (like Vucotic, Dumitrescu etc.). If anyone wants to add references from neutral sources you are most welcome. Thank you Abudabanas (talk) 07:41, 4 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Cleaned up a bit of vandalism

edit

Hi there. The first paragraph of the article referred to PAOK as an "unprofessional" football club. I changed that back to "professional". The same paragraph, last sentence, said that the club is "best known for allowing their owner to come to pitch with a gun". While this did happen, it is clearly not what the club is best known for so I removed it from the text. Audiohazel (talk) 03:22, 17 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Reassessment

edit

As of 8 April 2020, the article has been raised by an experienced editor from Start-Class / Low-Importance to B-Class / Mid-Importance on the WikiProject Football. I added a lot of references, tables , tags and tried to avoid major grammatical errors and write things down from a neutral point of view. I hope that future editors will persist on neutral writing and aim for the GA-Class (good article status). I'd personally be interested on how to further improve the article and any suggestions from expert editors are more than welcome. Thank you. Abudabanas (talk) 11:51, 22 April 2020 (UTC)Reply

PAOK FC LOGO ISSUE

edit

This logo has some visual issues. The "shining / glowing" parts on the wings are different, distorted and their quality is degraded compared to the original (official) logo. Also, the glowing parts in each wing, go "out of bounds".

The black "curved" design (frame) above "ΠΑΟΚ" text, is not a perfect (like the original logo) curve. I have the official logo, but I can't edit the page.
