Requested move

edit

(User:Roadrunner3000 added the move template to the article, but that's not the right place, so I moved it here. Note that there's a competing proposal by User:Georgia guy at Talk:Public Broadcasting Service. Gdr 09:29, 2005 Apr 18 (UTC))

I have moved the votes to Talk:Public Broadcasting Service due to the competing proposal to move Public Broadcasting Service to PBS. This will make it easier to reach a consensus if a move is to be made. If anyone else wishes to express an oppinion pease do so on Talk:Public Broadcasting Service --Philip Baird Shearer 21:05, 18 Apr 2005 (UTC)

No consensus to move. Vegaswikian (talk) 06:27, 1 September 2011 (UTC)Reply

PBS (disambiguation)PBS – Although a large number of pages link to PBS when Public Broadcasting Service is meant, that is not the primarytopic, and so PBS should be a disambiguation page. According to WP:DABNAME, it is acceptable to have the disambiguation page at PBS rather than PBS (disambiguation). StAnselm (talk) 09:02, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply

Please be more specific than "it is not the primary topic". Georgia guy (talk) 12:35, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think what StAnselm means is not that not enough of the incoming links to PBS are actually intended for the Public Broadcasting Service article for "Public Broadcasting Service" to be considered the clear primary topic of "PBS" (incoming links being one of the recommended ways to determine the primary topic). Jenks24 (talk) 13:06, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
What other articles are some of them intended for?? Georgia guy (talk) 13:07, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
I would guess some of the other articles listed at PBS (disambiguation), but I'm sure StAnselm will be able to give a more specific answer. Jenks24 (talk) 15:09, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
I think Public Broadcasting Service is the primary topic, and that PBS should redirect there. Thundermaker (talk) 18:36, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose I believe Public Broadcasting Service is the primary topic for PBS for several reasons: 1) Page visits. Last month PBS had 19399 hits; the disambiguation page and the two articles in the hatnote with the initials PBS had a combined 2490. So even if every visit to the latter three pages came via the PBS redirect to the Public Broadcasting Service article, that's still just about 13%--meaning that Public Broadcasting Service was likely the desired destination of about 7 out of 8 users entering or clicking on PBS. 2) Incoming links. Public Broadcasting Service may not be the intended target of every link on PBS, but it's nearly every one. I went through the list, clicking on random links, dozens of them, and they all were intended for Public Broadcasting Service. 3) Google search. The first ten results for a search on PBS were related to the Public Broadcasting Service, followed by a single result for a computer software company, followed by another 30+ for Public Broadcasting Service. The redirect should remain as it is.--ShelfSkewed Talk 20:15, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment Looking at another group of comments on this issue, it seems that, unsurprisingly, Google results will vary depending on your location. So while PBS search results in North America, as the ones I reported are, are likely to skew heavily to Public Broadcasting Service, results in other areas of the world are likely to be different. Just something to keep in mind. I still think my first two points are sufficient to carry the argument.--ShelfSkewed Talk 20:39, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose based on the evidence presented by ShelfSkewed. --JaGatalk 20:23, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose for the same reasons as ShelfSkewed. Also regarding what links here for PBS, StAnselm's contributions for 24-25 August show many edits with the summary Disambiguated: PBS → Public Broadcasting Service -- I didn't examine every edit, but I did not notice any where PBS was disambiguated to something other than Public Broadcasting Service (StAnselm please feel free to clarify if you did find any others). I'm not suggesting that StAnselm did anything wrong by fixing the redirect links (even though they weren't actually "broken" until the redirect was changed with only the flimsiest of discussion) -- but anyone looking at what links here for PBS might not realize that several dozen pages were recently edited to remove the links. olderwiser 20:35, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment. I never hinted in the slightest that Public Broadcasting Service was not the target of most of - or even all - the links. I didn't regard that as sufficient to establish it as the primary topic, although I accept that it is mentioned under WP:PRIMARYTOPIC as one of the tools that "may help to support the determination of a primary topic in a discussion, but are not determining factors." StAnselm (talk) 22:08, 25 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose. The page view statistics ShelfSkewed mentions are quite compelling. One might say they've skewed my opinion on it (if one is given to bad puns, that is). oknazevad (talk) 00:45, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Oppose – incoming links (thousands) are almost all meant for Public Boradcasting Service. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 06:16, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
  • Comment. As the proposer, I realise there is a clear consensus (now) against the move, and in favour of redirecting PBS to Public Broadcasting Service. This discussion can be closed early if anybody wishes. StAnselm (talk) 09:16, 26 August 2011 (UTC)Reply
