REDIRECT

edit

Good call Tskoge - I agree with your re-revert. There is nothing on the disambiguation page that is "bigger" than THE PSP. Plus it is a recognised brand name, unlike the others (which are just short-forms). Deano 17:33, 5 September 2005 (UTC)Reply

PSP Redirect

edit

Okay, there are a total of 12 articles that can be reffered to as "PSP". The REDIRECT *needs* to go to the Disambiguation page. To link this 'ambiguous three-letter acronym' to any single *one* of these articles is asinine. I'd easily say a couple of you have broken the 3R rule here. At this point, if someone *still* feels that PSP needs to redirect to a single one of the 1/12th of the possible meanings to PSP, please RfC.

For reference, from GoogleFights:

  • Personal Software Process - 113,000,000 results
  • Payment Service Provider - 22,600,000 results
  • PlayStation Portable - 13,200,000 results
  • Pennsylvania State Police - 11,100,000 results
  • Paint Shop Pro - 9,380,000 results

- You'll notice that the PlayStation Portable is *not* the most popular of the PSP's. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.106.209.210 (talkcontribs)

Just no. If you use quotes to surround the queries, the results are much different. The only entry that comes close to the PlayStation Portable is Paint Shop Pro. PSP is a brand name for the PlayStation, and Paint Shop Pro is the only other major entry. Put it up for a vote if you wish.--SirNuke 04:16, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Now, we will use some logic in this PSP redirect argument and you will tell us if the PSP acronym for "Personal Software Process" is as popular as the acroymn for PlayStation Portable. Pcpp 08:31, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply
Just Googled all of them:
122,000 for "Personal Software Process"
223,000 for "Payment Service Provider"
10,200,000 for "PlayStation Portable"
335,000 for "Pennsylvania State Police"
10,500,000 for "Paint Shop Pro"
The Sony one is just behind the paint shop program, but is also much newer. Googling for PSP shows that the Sony one tops the list. Tskoge 13:10, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Your own data seems to contradict your conclusion... 10,500,000 is a larger number than 10,200,000 in every radix and numeral system I'm aware of. Either you have discovered a radical new form of numerical notation or you've misinterpreted your results. In any case, this should redirect to the disambiguation page simply because there is at least one other notable usage of the acronym, and it's a general rule here to do so whenever there is reasonable ambiguity regarding a term. It isn't our place to determine what readers "should" expand the initialism as. -- uberpenguin 20:17, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
That's because people don't refer to PSP (the handheld console) as a 'Playstation Portable' very often. People *do* however refer to Paint Shop Pro as just that - "Paint Shop Pro". —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 220.233.190.180 (talkcontribs) .

I made a disambiguation page for PSP before reading this discussion. Forgive me... I reverted it once I saw that this is a controversy. However, I strongly agree for those who vote for the disambiguation. I am probably biased because I have been using Paint Shop Pro for years and haven't touched the Sony system, and in my mind PSP always referred to the software. However, it appears that, given the evidence presented in the form of search results, there are a lot of people who regularly use some of the other terms listed. I think to dismiss the usage of this acronym for the other terms would be a mistake. cerebralpayne 16:04, 2 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
I could go either way on this. I'd like it to stay as a redirect to the disambiguation page given the many other uses for PSP (including the popular Paint Shop Pro), however, the problem here is that most, if not all, the links to "PSP" are PlayStation Portable related and therefore the page should probably be a redirect to PlayStation Portable. I don't really feel strongly either way, but thats just my 2cents. K1Bond007 20:07, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
Links that intend "PlayStation Portable" as "PSP" should be disambiguated anyway; it's always considered poor form to link to a redirect (or disambiguation page) for reasons like this. -- uberpenguin 20:20, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
There are too many other uses for PSP for it to go straight to PlayStation Portable, because it'd be impossible to list all of them on that page (see The Princess Bride for an example of how to deal with a multi-use issue when there are only two). The disambig page really must stay. The solution is perhaps to somehow highlight the gaming platform so that most folks who go there will click right through. I'll see what I can do. · Katefan0(scribble)/mrp 20:22, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply
I fixed all the current wikilinks that pointed to PSP but meant PlayStation Portable. There were probably less than a hundred of them which, if you compare with the volume of links to PlayStation Portable, shows that most people DO know how to properly disambiguate a link. -- uberpenguin 21:00, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Guys, this is an encyclopedia, not a vehicle for you to promote your favourite concole ;) There are a lot of options for what PSP means, two of which are more likely than the others. A disambiguation page is the right way in this case. Thanks/wangi 21:32, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Folks, this is not a big enough issue to get into revert wars over! Redirects should be bypassed anyway, so almost no readers will be seeing the redirect page. Better to put your energy into seeing what links there, and piping links to bypass the redirect directly to PlayStation Portable or whatever is appropriate, changing [[PSP]] into [[PlayStation Portable|PSP]] (it's usually best not to mess with user's pages, though).

Google results alone don't mean that much; the Sony game and the PC software are both heavily marketed items, so their numbers are artificially bloated. Nobody is using thousands of commercial web sites to shill Palm Springs International Airport or Paralytic shellfish poisoning as stocking-stuffers. The Sony product is also this year's new game, so its prominence is fleeting. Nevertheless, the two top items score practically identical numbers of hits, less than one percent different, so there is no obvious most-prominent target for PSP. PSP should probably continue to redirect to PSP (disambiguation). Michael Z. 2006-01-3 21:35 Z

Luckily there aren't that many pages linking to this one. I have disambiguated most of them in the past as a part of a personal task.
As for where to redirect, Wikipedia states that you should ask to use common sense. Where would someone hope to end if they type PSP? I still associate PSP with Paint Shop Pro, but also admit that PSP is a hot term right now. PSP is a registered trademark of Sony too. And when you put PSP in Google's "I Feel Lucky", you go to Sony page. But it is also true that DS is virtually another way of calling Nintendo DS, and when you put DS in Google's "I Feel Lucky", you go to Nintendo. How did Wikipedia solve the DS problem? By just creating a disambiguation page. The same goes for GB and GC. If there is no guideline against a page linking to a disambiguation page, I would prefer a redirection there. If it is not something Wikipedia encourages, it should point to PlayStation Portable. -- ReyBrujo 21:56, 3 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

I'm sorry for coming into this discussion late, but I feel that the consensus around this is truly misplaced, in that I take it all parties agreed to disagree. As one who lacks a PSP (still lugging around my Game Gear) and has used Paint Shop Pro on various occasions, I feel I can be somewhat more neutral than others. I was put off by the fact that upon searching for PSP, I was brought to a disambiguation page, mostly filled with redlinks and other less important topics. My first instict was to move the pages to correct this issue, but decided to read the talk page first. It appears there is a great deal of contention (or at least there was, at the beginning of this year), and now that some time has past, I thought I could possibly bring it up again. I read over the Google results discussion, and decided to do a little research of my own. What we must remember, however, is that we are not making the disambiguation page based on the popularity of each product, but rather the popularity of the search term PSP. Using this information, I Googled "Paint Shop Pro" PSP, returning 1,390,000 results. Then I plugged in "Playstation Portable" PSP, and was impressed to see 14,000,000 results. Even plugging in plain PSP brings up the top two results (and most of the pages) as being for PSP. However, we should all know by now that Google is not infalliable. What really confuses me about this discussion though is why the PlayStation Portable "(officially PSP)", according to the article, is even considered competing with Paint Shop Pro for this acronym, in that PSP is an informal and unofficial—and less used—for Paint Shop Pro. Lastly, I looked over the Whatlinkshere page for PSP, Playstation Portable and Corel Paint Shop Pro, and saw the vast number of links pointing to PSP are intended for Playstation Portable, and there are a far greater number pointing to Playstation Portable than to Paint Shop Pro. I don't think this needs to go to RfC, but seriously, guys.... -Mysekurity [m!] 21:23, 30 March 2006 (UTC)Reply

I completely agree with you. Paint Shop Pro is almost always referred to as just that - "Paint Shop Pro". It is only occasionally referred to as PSP. The PlayStation Portable however is almost never referred to with its full name. Proof? psp+"playstation portable" - 10,600,000 hits. psp+"paint shop pro" - 1,420,000 hits. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 220.233.190.180 (talkcontribs) .
I believe the disambiguation page is fine enough. When someone mentions PC or P.C., where you expect to arrive and where you arrive? And when you say GBA? And ET? -- ReyBrujo 05:43, 18 June 2006 (UTC)Reply
Agreed. This page should most certainly redirect to a disambiguation page. The Google test is never "proof" of anything. -- uberpenguin @ 2006-06-19 12:37Z
Redirect PSP → PlayStation Portable. Top of the page put a redirect tag. "PSP redirects here. For the graphics program see Paint Shop Pro. For other uses of the acronym see PSP (dab)". --Bren talk 15:05, 18 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please don't switch...

edit

Please do not make this page the disambig page and the other the redirect. There is no valid reason to do so, both work equally well and by copying across the content you are breaking up the page history, see Wikipedia:How to rename (move) a page for the proper way to move a page. However there is no reason why things should not be left the way they are. Thanks/wangi 14:34, 7 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Agreed. It's generally preferable to have "(disambiguation)" in the title of dab articles, and it would confuse nobody to be redirected to that page. The redirect makes it more clear that the user IS indeed viewing a dab page. As you say, there is no reason it shouldn't be left as it is. -- uberpenguin 19:47, 8 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

But that isn't the case in other disambiguations. SMS is just SMS, with the disambiguation notice ont eh bottom to signify a diambiguation. I just requested and had Diddy moved from Diddy (disambiguation) since it seemed lame. An third, Princess Daisy funnels directly into an article about the Nintendo character, with Princess Daisy (disambiguation) serving as the place for other users. Given the three precedents I just listed, I really two things should be done:

  1. Make this a redirect to PSP and have the Template:Header on the PlayStation Portable page to direct other people to there, like in Princess Daisy's case.
  2. Make this the disambiguation page, and the other the redirect, like in Diddy's case.

Hbdragon88 03:01, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

See the section above why PSP cannot simply redirect to PlayStation Portable. There are many examples of dismbigs setup like this one (XXX redirecting to XXX (disambiguation)), it isn't broken, so there's nothing to fix - "if it aint broke, don't fix it". Thanks/wangi 09:45, 11 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

PSP MUST redirect to PlayStation Portable

edit

PlayStation Portable is the 535th most popular page on Wikipedia.[1] (PlayStation 2 is #612, PlayStation 3 is #12, PlayStation is #288.) Nothing else on the PSP disambig page is on the top 1000. People looking for PSP are looking for PlayStation Portable, nothing else. Stop the madness! PSP must redirect to PlayStation Portable. Johnsonsjohnson 11:03, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply

Maybe, but there's an awful lot of them. I disagree. yandman 11:04, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
PSP should NEVER redirect to a video game article, there are many, many things that can be PSP that have nothing to do with a kid's toy. L0b0t 14:42, 14 November 2006 (UTC)Reply
PSP should remain a disambiguation page, as is usually done in these cases. -- mattb @ 2006-11-14T15:08Z
PlayStation Portable is the 535th most popular page on Wikipedia... so apprently people find it easily without redirection (which is obvious becuase PlayStation Portable is the first link on this page). If you find PlayStation Portable too long to type you can always use the redirection of Sony_PSP. The Seventh Taylor 12:58, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
There is no wikipedia rule stating that disambiguations are not prefered when one of the articles redirected to is visited a lot. What is clear, is that wikipedia rules prefer disambiguation pages in cases of conflict: "Disambiguation in Wikipedia is the process of resolving conflicts in article titles that occur when a single term can be associated with more than one topic." I'd say keep it as it is. C mon 14:12, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
Concur. Keep it a dab. KillerChihuahua?!? 14:24, 4 May 2007 (UTC)Reply
I too think that it should remain disambiguous. - Grumpyyoungman01 05:06, 19 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I say we REDIRECT it to Playstation Portable. Google fight or no, we could even compare the SELLING COUNTS per week if anyone wants to. It's just too overwhelming popular. bladez (talk) 21:47, 14 July 2008 (UTC)Reply

Vandalism

edit

It's remarkable how prone this page is to vandalism. Perhaps this would be less so if the page redirected to PlayStation Portable but that's the only benefit I could see to that. The Seventh Taylor 17:35, 29 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Shouldn't this page (the article I mean -- not the talk page) be semi-protected? The Seventh Taylor 21:03, 25 September 2007 (UTC)Reply

how to change primary topic

edit

To find consensus for a change from a primary topic to no primary topic for PSP, please follow WP:RM to request this page be moved to the base name. -- JHunterJ (talk) 13:50, 29 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

Since the PSP redirect was changed to a fork of the (disambiguation) three days ago, and nobody reverted that or objected, and PlayStation Portable was discontinued over three years ago and has yet-to-be-determined long-term significance, I've taken that as a de facto consensus to pull the handheld game console off of WP:primary topic status. With smartphones for handheld gaming, who needs separate devices anymore, I suppose.
@KennyOMG, Malcolmxl5, and Samee: the page history of your recent edits that created a fork of this page are at PSP (disambiguation) – I swapped the pages – in case there's anything you added that isn't redundant to what's already here, feel free to merge that into this page. – wbm1058 (talk) 03:38, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
Not sure how I missed the disambiguation page. My edit with 2 items did feel a bit thin. :) - KennyOMG (talk) 22:09, 1 March 2018 (UTC)Reply
