Shouldn't we try to be consistent and use only one naming version? This plane is being called primarily in Polish sources as PZL p.23 Karas, though other versions (PZL P.23 Karas, PZL P-23 Karas) are used as well. Anyway, the PZL.23 Karaś seems to be the least popular - at least in my sources. Halibutt 22:07, 16 Apr 2004 (UTC)

Some sources claimed, that letter "P" before a number was reserved for Pulawski's design fighters (like PZL P.11), but it is true, that this is not strictly obeyed in many sources. However, I think, that we may call the fighters with "P" only. Pibwl 19:50, 19 Jul 2004 (UTC)
Łoś was certainly not a work of Puławski, yet it was referred to as PZL P.37A and PZL P.37B. I'm sure I saw this name used in a pre-war source. Halibutt 20:17, Jul 19, 2004 (UTC)
GET this book for genuine designations of pre-war polish aircraft!! Cynk, Jerzy B.. “Polish Aircraft 1893 – 1939”. London, Putnam. 1971. ISBN 0 370 00085 4. P.Z.L. aircraft were designated thus:- either P.Z.L.22, P.Z.L. P.23 Karaś (P stood for Pulawski or Prauss usually only on military aircraft) or P.Z.L. Ł.2, note the full stops and spaces but NO hyphens!!!Petebutt (talk) 18:07, 12 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Why is it called Karas?

edit

Over the years my family lore has it that the PZL P23 Karas was named after Edward Karas in recognition of his airborne exploits in the war against Russia in 1918/19 for which he won a Virtuti Militari. I have no corroboration of this family history and would welcome confirmation or otherwise from anyone who might have some facts.Paul Karas (talk) 23:19, 8 January 2008 (UTC)Reply

Karas means Crucian Carp a species of fish!Petebutt (talk) 18:08, 12 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Beautiful family lore, but highly doubtful. Many Polish pre-war aircraft were named after animals, depending on their designation, e.g. reconaissance planes had bird names (Mewa - gull, Czapla - heron), medium and heavy bombers forest animals names (Los - moose, Zubr - European bison) and light bombers fish names (Karas - crucian carp, Sum - catfish).
