The Thirteenth Amendment contains two important aspects: slavery and involuntary servitude. This amendment allows the use of forced labor (rather than slavery) for punishment purposes, provided that “the party shall have been duly convicted,” that is, after going through a legal procedure, that slavery does not entail.
