Sources are generally about art and color theory, but I feel like the original edits were from a computer image context (and it's not a part of any arts/visual projects, how sad.)
Here (p15) Talking about Newton's color wheel, where the hues on the outside slowly merge into white.
Here (p98) Things turn pale when "brightness exceed certain limits"
Here(p154) saying "paleness is nearer to white" in the degrees of white to black.
Here (p19) says "unsaturated color does not change hue or tint, but produces paleness"
