Panama is one of the most "Americanized" or U.S. influenced countries there even was, due to the U.S. military occupation and construction of the Panama Canal from 1903 when Panama gained its independence from Colombia to the canal's opening to interoceanic commercial traffic in 1914. The U.S. Panama Canal Zone was a territorial possession under the stars amd striples from then on to the Panama Canal Treaty of 1978 made the Canal Zone get returned to Panamanian rule in 1979, and the canal was under Panamanian operation as of December 31, 1999. The number of Panamanians came to the US via the Panama Canal Zone, in which much of its US-territory era population consists of Afro-Caribbean and West Indian nationalities (esp. the British colonial subject peoples like Jamaicans) were brought over to build the canal. 71.102.26.168 (talk) 00:38, 10 June 2011 (UTC)Reply
