Influences
Not mentioned in the "influences" is John McLaughlin. Whom I have, on numerous occasions, read Metheney speak very highly of. The Shakti guitar used by McLaughlin in the early-mid seventies is clearly a forerunner to the Pikasso guitar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Armins (talk • contribs) 15:42, 7 April 2011 (UTC)
University of Miami
One real intersting fact about P. Metheny is not mentioned on this page: Pat was given a full scholarship to University of Miami's music school. Very shortly after he enrolled, he decided he couldn't hack it and told the administration he was planning on dropping out. Hearing this, the University of Miami immediately offered him a teaching position, which he took. Going to UM is where he likely met Jaco Pastorius, so I think his time in Miami is notable.
No signature above. My text starts here: On this interview (see link below), Pat Metheny confirms that he taught at the University of Miami and at the Berklee College of Music in Boston when he was 18 and 19, respectively. He doesn't say anything about attending the UM as a student of dropping out of college, but he says that he was invited to teach at the UM right after finishing High School.
Berklee is one of the most respected music institutions in the whole world, so I think that part of his resume is quite relevant, particularly because of his age at the time. That part of his resume should be included as well and perhaps the whole story about dropping from college excluded as it doesn't make much sense, could be wrong and lacks citation. Can someone please revise accordingly?

My GOD that discography section is ugly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.24.18.78 (talk) 05:17, 24 June 2004 (UTC)
Needs work
Someone did a copy-paste of a discography here. I tried to re-arrange it but I'm not sure this belongs here with that much detail.
Yes, this passage was/is extremely detailed. Maybe an external link with the discography would be better. Anyway I've put it at the end, so the article is readable. Jost ammon 05:57, 22 Jul 2004 (UTC)
URV
I have reverted it because of URV http://www.independentvoice.com/1307/1307%20mondavi%20ctr%20presents%20pat%20methany%20group.html --Ot 15:02, 4 May 2005 (UTC)
- Thanks for catching that. It did look like somebody pasted it from some other source, hence my half-hearted attempt at cleaning it up. Julius.kusuma 20:41, 4 May 2005 (UTC)
Pat Metheny Information
This article reads like a description of Pat Metheny Group, not Pat Metheny. We need to put something in here about Pat and move all of the detailed PMG stuff to the PMG article. A light overview of PMG as one of Pat's long-term projects would be sufficient. I might want to make a large reorganization of this article if no-one objects. Thoughts? Please reply here for discussion. — Mperry 17:27, 3 February 2006 (UTC)
- The move of the PMG material seems complete--now's the time to start a re-write of the Pat Metheny page. Any volunteers to get it started? — Martin Monkman 04:40, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
- I'll start with a clean-up/rewrite when I get home Friday night. --Mperry 20:37, 11 May 2006 (UTC)
This article has about as much text on the Pat Metheny Group as the main article on the Pat Metheny Group. That's too much duplication. We should either 1) move more info on PMG to the PMG article, or 2) merge the two articles.Bsharvy 08:32, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Thin or heavy pick?
Either somebody should finally clear this dispute up by providing a clearly sourced answer, or the whole sentence should probably be removed. The periodic unexplained to-ing and fro-ing between 'thin' and 'heavy' serves no useful purpose. Guy Hatton 06:51, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Update: a Google search on the subject suggests strongly that 'thin' is the correct answer, but it might be preferable if somebody could post a reference where this information comes 'from the horses mouth'. So far, I have not found any direct quote from Metheny confirming his use of (or preference for) a thin pick. I shall leave the 'citation needed' tag in place, but try to ensure that the text reads 'thin' for the time being. Guy Hatton 14:53, 11 September 2006 (UTC)
Hi. I realize my words doesn't carry much weight, since I'm anonymus. But, Metheny personally gave me one of his picks. (In a situation where i had lost my own, and needed to borrow.) It is a large pick, extremely thin. Metheny uses it "sideways, so it bends around the thumb and acts like a sort of medium pick. regards. The writing on the pick spells simply "Pat Metheny."
Split
I started a new article, Pat Metheny discography. Does someone agree that the whole section regarding PMG has to be cut and merged with its own Pat Metheny group article?--Dr. Who 01:09, 5 February 2007 (UTC)
- I am surprised PMG even have their own article at all01:15, 5 February 2007 (UTC)

Point of View (POV) Problems
There's a lot of personal point-f-view in this article....
- "Metheny has written over 200 pieces and continues to push musical limits in both his composition and performance."
- The entirety of the "Side Projects" and "Guitar Contributions" sections
- "Pat took part in recording some of the CDs by his elder brother, trumpeter Mike Metheny [3], a talented jazz musician and a trumpet player"
These opinions need to be attributed to a notable source, e.g. "Jazz guitarist Jim Hall has said Metheny pushes musical limits..." or deleted.Bsharvy 08:40, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Also, the entire section on Kenny-G seems pretty gratuitous. Why is that a central to an encyclopedia entry for Pat Metheny? It seems like Kenny G bashing (which may be fun and reasonable, but not appropriate to do in Wikipedia). Also, note Wikipedia's strict policies regarding statements about living people. Bsharvy 08:42, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Well go ahead and delete the Kenny G stuff and clean up any other POV non-cited stuff. thanks Peter morrell 05:58, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- Yes, go ahead, be bold; though Im mostly busy with the Pink Floyd Wikiproject and also with the planning of a new wikiproject related to music technology, I come here from time to time, and I am happy to help and support any good changes in this article.Doktor Who 11:17, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
Here is the removed Kenny G stuff
Criticism of Kenny G
Metheny has been highly critical of instrumental pop saxophonist Kenny G. A detailed analysis of Kenny G's playing and approach was offered by Metheny on his Web site in 2000, archived on Jazz Oasis.com [3]. Drawing Metheny's extreme ire was Kenny G's overdubbing of a song by legendary jazz trumpeter Louis Armstrong. Metheny stated, "By disrespecting Louis, his legacy and by default, everyone who has ever tried to do something positive with improvised music and what it can be, Kenny G has created a new low point in modern culture - something that we all should be totally embarrassed about" - the full Q & A contains far more explicit commentary.
The statement has received support by other musicians. English guitarist Richard Thompson responded to Metheny's comment's by writing the song, "I Agree With Pat Metheny, Kenny's Talents Are Too Teeny."[4] Also, a trio of improvisational American musicians, have toured numerous times by the "punk jazz" moniker, "The Dead Kenny G's."
...question is: can it be modified and added back or shall it stay here as a deleted item? comments please. thanks Peter morrell 15:35, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- This can all stay out. It reads somewhat like a gossip column. It is unlikely that he intended for his original statements to become so widely read. What might work however is a brief generalized mention of all of his literary work (be it blog) in the biography section. Also, a gentle
(with a capital G)mention of controvery, or criticism by improvisatioanl artists towards Kenny G's Armstrong "duet" may be appropriate on the Kenny G article. - Steve3849 talk 21:22, 30 August 2007 (UTC)- I fully agree with Steve, just my 1 cent.--Doktor Who 22:05, 30 August 2007 (UTC)
- I also agree. The removed section doesn't do anything to help explain who Metheny is and why he's notable. --Mperry 04:53, 31 August 2007 (UTC)
Has Pat Metheny lived in Cabo Frio (Rio de Janeiro)?
The article says Pat lived in Brazil... Well I heard he lived specifically in Cabo Frio, does anyone know if that is true? Does he still have a house in there?--Vittau (talk) 07:22, 22 July 2008 (UTC)
I am not sure about Cabo Frio, but I know for sure (sorry, I can't prove it) that Metheny used to rent an apartment at Avenida Delfim Moreira across the Leblon Beach in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil around 1988 and spent a lot of time in that city. I once visited that apartment accompanying guitarist Toninho Horta (I was his roadie). Around that time he also held auditions in Rio for a percussionist and hired Armando Marçal to play with the PMG. If someone finds this relevant and can trust my word, please update accordingly.

New PM template
I have added a new Pat Metheny template with links to all of his albums, including those on the Pat Metheny Group template and with the two PMG singles also listed. I wondered whether anyone else thinks that it would be a good idea to merge them both together. I like the separate PMG article, but I also think that it would be good just to have one template that enables his entire body of work to be navigated easily. Thanks. Dear Anonymous Editor -- Why do you keep deleting/inserting/redeleting/reinserting the same stuff all the time? PaulCHebert (talk) 02:56, 11 February 2017 (UTC)
Chronology v. chronologies
I looked at the infoboxes on the album pages, and the chronology is confusing. I had been going along with having one chronology for the Group and one for solo and other albums, but what appears now is inconsistent, a mishmash. So in the interest of simplicity, I'm going to delete the secondary chronology and have one Pat Metheny chronology for all albums on which Metheny is a leader or co-leader, starting with Bright Size Life, including all Group, solo, trio, etc. albums in one category. Someone will probably come along and change it back, but I think this is the simplest way, the easiest way to follow what albums Metheny has recorded in chronological order, which is the point. You don't really get that on Metheny's discography page, which is grouped by solo, duo, trio, Group, and so on, before being listed chronologically.

Personal life
Something about Metheny's personal life might be good.
Metheny is married to Latifa and has 3 children as described below. "Pat is here with his striking French-Moroccan wife, Latifa, their two young sons and a new baby." - I'm not in favor of this kind of thing for several reasons. This is an encyclopedia, not People magazine or TMZ. If people thought about the possible ramifications, I doubt they would want the names of their spouses or children on Wikipedia. Would you? I believe in erring on the side of privacy rather than ceding to nosiness. That also applies to where they are living, residing, "currently based in". The information is temporary and private. Even if the information can be found in published sources, that doesn't mean it belongs in Wikipedia. WP documentation discourages us from trying to include everything and everyone.
–Vmavanti (talk) 20:15, 31 May 2017 (UTC)- Strongly agree: Unless the subject of the article has made their spouse or family a matter of public concern, I have no interest in who they sleep with, parent, or otherwise spend their down time with. PaulCHebert (talk) 20:38, 31 May 2017 (UTC)
- I find the above two arguments against rather puzzling and, worse, overly opinionated. There are slews of articles here about musicians and artists with brief sections on their private lives that tactfully mention whether the person is married, including the spouse's name and for how long. True, Wikipedia is NOT People magazine, but a ton of what is found in People is also found here so I find that argument rather lacking in logic rather than opinion. NOWHERE can it be found that Pat is married to Latifa? Gee, then how did the above poster find out? If it's public information it doesn't matter whether the subject of the article actually makes it a public matter, it matters whether or not it already IS a public matter. Privacy? If you don't want your private life written about, don't live a public life. Pat is a widely known musician and the information the OP wants included is already public knowledge (he found it). There is nothing wrong with including a brief blurb mentioning he is married, to whom and for how long. Number of kids is fine too but there is plenty of good reason not to include their names unless Pat himself has discussed them by name publicly and it can be sourced relialbly. It is irrelevant whether individually we care or not. It matters if the person is a celebrity and living in the public light. Others will care and should be able to read about it if they so choose, especially if the information is already publicly available, which in this case, IT IS. Comment about From this Place
His new album, "From this Place" currently redirects to this page. If it does get created (I don't have time to put in a new stub), a good comment would be that his cover art is based upon the following Commons image (it has been attributed in the album). --Lama12 (talk) 12:01, 13 March 2020 (UTC)
