Article title
editI moved the page because his last name was mispelled. It was spelled as "O'Neal" but it should've been spelled "Oneal". He stated this on a recent episode of Opie and Anthony (today is 01/09/2006). If you visit his website, it is also spelled Oneal. -Weters 21:20, 9 January 2006 (UTC)
- I went ahead and made the O'neal to Oneal changes on the page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.56.61.171 (talk) 19:04, 10 April 2006 (UTC)
- On his website, you can read it in big letters as O'Neal. Added to the x times of O'Neal in the bio on his site, you can trust it is written with an apostrohe.--Mideal (talk) 13:13, 14 May 2013 (UTC)

Link to a review site
editHi,
yesterday I deleted an external link from this article's page. It was a link to the page http://tilzy.tv/ . Specifically the tilzy-page on this article's topic. I came to the idea of deleting those links as such a link was also added to Ze Frank's wikipedia page, and I expected that there wouldn't be much new information on such an external site, as Ze Frank's show ended more than half a year ago.
I got a mail now by one of the founders of tilzy.tv. He explained to me relatively convincingly that he didn't post the link, and that he thinks of his site as adding extra information.
Whether or not we re-add this link should probably be based on Wikipedia:External_links.
I am actually not sure whether tilzy.tv is a
Sites that contain neutral and accurate material that cannot be integrated into the Wikipedia article due to copyright issues, amount of detail (such as professional athlete statistics, movie or television credits, interview transcripts, or online textbooks) or other reasons.
Does someone else know this site?
My main concern was, that there should be several sites that aggregate links to vlogs. Even several sites that aggregate links and add write a small review about them. So I wasn't sure whether tilzy.tv is in someway special or provided better information.
Could maybe someone post his/her opinion on that, so we can decided whether or not to include the links to tilzy.tv.
Thanks, -- JanCK (talk) 09:57, 11 December 2007 (UTC)
Yikes
editGuys, this article is in dire shape. Basic pieces of information conflict (e.g., it says in one place that Oneal was born in New York, and in another place that he was born in Boston), almost none of it is sourced, there are unverifiable claims and some of the info seems to have been fabricated out of whole cloth (Oneal neither got a degree from Northeastern nor played football there). Unless someone is monitoring this page and wants to clean it up, I'm gonna do a heavy edit. Babajobu (talk) 23:07, 13 October 2011 (UTC)
Birthplace?
editI removed the two conflicting statements about his place of birth. I can't find a reliable secondary source that settles where he was from. Better to have neither place in the article than both. If anyone knows of a source for this, please edit the article accordingly or refer me to it. Babajobu (talk) 03:17, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
Unsourced and dubious statements
editI removed the following unsourced material, which is likely false:
A high school football player, he was recruited to play for the Northeastern University football team, but quit football to study theatre arts and pursue stand-up comedy. He graduated from Northeastern with a Bachelor's.
Babajobu (talk) 03:26, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
- I think he did an extensive interview on Marc Maron's podcast, WTF. Would that be a valid source of information, or would everything need to be posted as quotes? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 75.87.201.168 (talk) 12:44, 13 November 2011 (UTC)
- Uh,no. Marc Maron is not a source, and if he did give a interview it would have to be quoted.--99.177.248.92 (talk) 20:52, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
Subject of article is in the news
editOkay, I'm moving ahead with the deletions again, removing all unsourced, conflicting, dubious, and promotional-sounding material. People will be googling him today, and the article as is doesn't reflect well on Wikipedia. Babajobu (talk) 15:09, 26 October 2011 (UTC)
Moved article to Patrice O'Neal
editPrevious page title was incorrect, he's only occasionally credited as Oneal, and this is not how he spells his own name. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Babajobu (talk • contribs) 01:29, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- This is incorrect. His legal name is Oneal. In the last two years he changed it to O'Neal on his website, but if you look at his old site or The Patrice Oneal show, it's written Oneal. He's discussed this on-air as well. I would recommend moving it back.Frogacuda (talk) 01:43, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- Hmmm...the wikipedia article is one of the few sources online that spell it Oneal. But okay, I'll take your word for it and change it back. Babajobu (talk) 01:48, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- Yeah, he changed over a few years ago. Here's his old site: http://web.archive.org/web/20070115021310/http://www.patriceoneal.com/about.htm. This also settles the place of birth thing. There are other ways to verify his name that are probably best not used as wiki sources, especially at the moment. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Frogacuda (talk • contribs) 02:08, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
- Can we do a redirect from Patrice O'neal, that way when its searched people will find it.P0PP4B34R732 (talk) 01:51, 28 October 2011 (UTC)
Death date
editConflicting info here. Says at top died yesterday, in body says died a week after stroke in October Cookiehead (talk) 18:45, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
- Article is changing rapidly today. Most of the sources that list a specific date say "Monday night", ie: 11/28. I don't see anything about a 'week after the stroke' at all currently. DP76764 (Talk) 18:48, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
- patriceoneal.com states "this morning at 7:00am" which conflicts with "monday night" at least. 98.229.223.5 (talk) 21:33, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- Indeed it does. I'm sure this will sort itself out given enough time though. That's a pretty good source though. DP76764 (Talk) 22:21, 30 November 2011 (UTC)
- Official website and other official source updated. Nov 29 at 7:00 AM is correct. Let's stabilize this. Frogacuda (talk) 15:18, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Requested move
edit- The following discussion is an archived discussion of the proposal. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. No further edits should be made to this section.
No consensus to move. Vegaswikian (talk) 03:05, 8 December 2011 (UTC)
Patrice O'Neal → Patrice Oneal – Please be aware that Oneal is his legal give last name, when the article was originally created it was done so as Patrice Oneal but unfortunately some uninformed person(s) have decided it should be O'Neal because their rationale was that how he spelled it which is incorrect only on occassion and very rarely did he spell it O'Neal so therefore it should be returned to the original Patrice Oneal. I'd also like to request that this article be semi-locked to prevent future moves without administrative approval. Thank you. TheGoofyGolfer (talk) 00:31, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose per WP:COMMONNAME. His official website uses O'Neal as does the NY Times obituary. No sources in the article or nomination indicate his name is Oneal. Tassedethe (talk) 03:57, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- Support. I wouldn't say O'Neal is rare/incorrect, but you can look him up in the phone book, it's Oneal. That's the name on his birth certificate, and it was the name on his website until like a year ago. O'Neal is how he's registered in SAG and thus how he's credited as a performer, but it's not his legal name, and it's also not how he was self-credited until recently. The NYT can spell it however they want, it won't change the facts. It's very similar to the discrepency with Jim Jeffries/Jefferies' name. Frogacuda (talk) 15:01, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- Oppose, per WP:COMMONNAME. It does not matter what is in the phone book or what is on his birth certificate. I would say this is less akin to the Jim Jeffries situation and more closely resembles Muhammad Ali or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar--both were known professionally by a certain name but chose to change their names, and they are now listed on Wikipedia with those names. O'Neal used to be professionally known as "Patrice Oneal", but he chose to change that, for whatever reason, to "Patrice O'Neal". If he had done that, yesterday, then I can see arguing for the move back to "Patrice Oneal", but this was quite a while ago; long enough that he used the spelling "Patrice O'Neal" on his website, his public appearances, Elephant in the Room, etc.. The fact that the obituaries used this spelling is indicative of the commonality of this stage name. Chickenmonkey 18:16, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- The reason it's like Jeffries is that it arises out of how his name is registered with SAG. Jeffries is credited as Jefferies in the US because that's how he's registered in SAG. He literally doesn't have a choice. It's the same thing here. On TV credits, he was always O'Neal because of SAG, on everything else, he was always Oneal, and then in late 2010 he changed it on his website to be consistent.Frogacuda (talk) 19:52, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- Which, to me, would mean it is even more apt to leave this article at "Patrice O'Neal", because it is clearly the most common name. Chickenmonkey 23:21, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- I wonder, however, if that's a reflection of the fact that the wiki was moved a week before his death. For example, imdb changed his name after his death. I get the common name argument, though, as long as people don't change his proper name (again) in the intro paragraphFrogacuda (talk) 23:44, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
- I agree; his proper name should never be changed. Chickenmonkey 00:22, 2 December 2011 (UTC)

Wife?
editPatrice has talked a lot about his relationship with Vondecarlo Brown, and how he gave her a ring and allowed her to claim him as a husband, but I'm fairly certain they were not married in any official capacity. Is there a good way to reconcile this, and if they were not legally married how should she be referred to in the article?Frogacuda (talk) 20:58, 1 December 2011 (UTC)
Statutory rape: reliable sources!!!
editFolks, I see that there is once again a fairly lengthy, top-of-the-article account of Patrice O'Neal's alleged conviction for statutory rape. In a biographical article this sort of sensitive material requires very solid references to high-quality reliable sources. And yet there is still no reliable source provided for this: rather, only a single citation to a shock-jocky podcast. A number of people seem to be editing this article. Does anyone here actually believe that this section on the alleged rape, as currently sourced, has any business whatsoever staying in the article? Babajobu (talk) 11:41, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- Folks, I'm deleting those two sentences. Do not put them back in without providing a reliable source for the claim that Oneal was convicted of statutory rape. Thanks. Babajobu (talk) 20:25, 20 April 2013 (UTC)
- In his own words: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CybGo6hALVo
- So I'm putting it back in. Karin Anker (talk) 20:47, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
- His own comedic podcast is not a Wikipedia:Reliable sources. Removing it. Please discuss here on talk page before putting it back in the article. Babajobu (talk) 20:26, 3 April 2023 (UTC)
I love the 80's 3D
editI don't have a RS for it, but he also appeared on VH1's series 'I Love the 80's 3D' as a commentator. If anyone can find a RS....add please. Rja13ww33 (talk) 18:27, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
