I'm don't think it's tenable to include every Pat Kelly here -- yes, I know Pat is short for Patrick -- let alone everyone with Patrick as a second name, as in Red Kelly's case. Then there are all the Paddy Kellys... I think we should stick to people who are actually known as "Patrick Kelly" and have separate pages for all the Pat Kellys and Paddy Kellys. It's better to put them on the same page since it's basically the same name. The Pats are all officially Patricks and often called Patrick anyway. Splitting them into separate pages will make them harder to find. Sectioning off by what they do would be a good idea though. Quarl (talk) 2007-04-07 07:53Z
I agree Quarl, all Pat's, Patrick's, Padraig's, Paddy's, Pádraic and and other derivitives of Patrick Kelly should all be on the same page.--Vintagekits 11:09, 7 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
They aren't "all Patricks"; Pat is also a common diminutive for Patricia, as well as Patterson and other first names. That is reason enough why "Pat Kelly" should not redirect here.Grant | Talk 13:06, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
I just check and they were all Patricks.--Vintagekits 13:10, 12 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
That is not the point; Wikipedia policy is to use common names, not full names and that applies to disambiguation pages as well. One of the reasons why we have disambiguation pages is so people can tell one "Pat Kelly" from another. Famous Pat Kellys who have not been christened Patrick, Padraig or Pádraic, will not be on this page. For example, if we have a Padraig Kelly and a Patricia Kelly who are both authors published under the name "Pat Kelly", then people looking for one of them will not be able to find them as easily, and may well go the wrong page. I share your same concern that it is important to allow readers to easily find what they're looking for, and I think a unified disambig page solves the problem better than repeating a subset of every name on name variation disambig pages. We already do have at least one Pádraic Kelly (Patrick Joseph Kelly) here and I can't imagine having a separate disambig page for every regional spelling variation since the membership would overlap 99%. Do you have a specific example of an existing article that would be listed at Pat Kelly but not Patrick Kelly? Quarl (talk) 2007-04-16 01:31Z

There are well-known Patricia Kellys and there is also bound to be a Patterson Kelly or Paterson Kelly known as Pat.

That is not counting the variations on Kelly: O'Kelly, Kelley, O'Kelley, etc. As I said before the page will become unmanageable, especially if it has dozens of names and people have to hunt for the person they are looking for.

What I propose is separate dab pages for each variation and the listing of articles on more than one where it is appropriate. Grant | Talk 03:02, 16 April 2007 (UTC)Reply

Granty, maybe you need a link on the page to the Pat Kelly page and vice versa. regards--Vintagekits 20:47, 24 April 2007 (UTC)Reply
