Nationality

Henreid's nationality" The title Freiherr indicates he was a baron. Did he maintain his Austrian citizenship or become a naturalized American?

I happened to revisit Henreid's autobiography Ladies' Man last week. The name "Hernried" is Swedish and when Paul was signed under contract to RKO in 1942 before starring in Joan of Paris, the production head of RKO complained that "Hernried" was too difficult for Americans to pronounce and that the spelling of the "i" and "e" had to be changed. Paul didn't want to be stubborn towards this puzzling change yet he wrote in his autobiography, "I have regretted this change ever since. I liked my original name much better."

Paul's father, who died when Paul was only eight years old, was a Viennese banker who was knighted by Emperor Franz Joseph of Austria in the late 19th Century. Also, the Hapsburg Monarchy was dissolved in 1918 after World War I ended. So Paul wasn't really of aristocratic birth and, more importantly, von merely means "of" or "from" in German. But to Paul it didn't matter if the von was added or not to his name. What did surprise him, however, was when the 1930s British press erroneously labeled him as "Baron Paul von Hernried" after he starred onstage as Prince Albert in the play Victoria Regina! Paul was embarrassed by this error and he became a joke among his friends because of it.

What is his real name?

There seems to be a number of variations of his name and no one seems to agree on his correct birth name. I'm not sure if the cited source for the current name is very reliable. For example there are these sources:

NS filmmaking institute??

The first paragraph under "Stage and film careers", that had contained the sentence I just removed, also makes no sense - it is not clear and seems to claim he tried very hard in 1934 to join a National Socialist (NS=Nazi) film-making society (NS filmmaking chamber, despite being avidly anti-nazi!?!?) and was ultimately barred by Goebbels himself. Perhaps someone with knowledge can rewrite/fix/explainbetter this paragraph??? The original author? It really is inexplicable as written. Dr.gregory.retzlaff (talk) 06:49, 9 January 2023 (UTC)
