The elder Martin was not Paul Martin, Sr., and the younger is not Paul Martin, Jr., since they have different middle names (much like George Herbert Walker Bush and George W. Bush. The elder Martin is Paul Joseph James Martin and the younger is Paul Edgar Philippe Martin. Homey 00:42, 20 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

I disagree with this conclusion. While I'm not familiar with many juniors and seniors, I've never heard of an explicit rule which requires that the names be exactly the same. Are we sure this isn't a specifically American convention?
In any case, this Paul Martin is commonly referred to in contemporary Canadian media as "Paul Martin, Sr.", and nobody would ever think of looking for him at "Paul Joseph James Martin". --Saforrest 06:25, 4 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

It actually is an explict rule which is why George Herbert Walker Bush is not offically referred to as George Bush Sr. and George W. Bush isn't George Bush Jr. Homey 00:24, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

See Junior which reads "A child with the exact same name as a parent (almost always a son and father, e.g., Ken Griffey, Jr.). They are sometimes (incorrectly in US English) also called II, especially if there's a third or fourth with the same name. (There are, however, situations where II is correct and Jr. is incorrect.) See also Suffix (name)" Homey 00:29, 25 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

But does that rule apply in Canadian English, which is the relevant form? In British English there aren't many cases we have Ian Paisley, Jr. who does not share his father's middle names. Countries where it's rare for fathers and sons to share most or all of the same names often don't have hard & fast rules on this. Even in those that do, such rules often get overlooked - in the US Ron Reagan is often called "Ronald Reagan, Jr" despite a different middle name. And my memory is that when the younger Bush was first talked about in the international media (c1996) he was known as "George Bush, Jr" and it was a deliberate marketing strategy to make him "George W. Bush". Timrollpickering (talk) 22:52, 20 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

The rule that applies to our article titles is not the matter of whether he ever used Sr. personally, it's the matter of how he's referred to in common usage. The common usage for this Paul Martin is "Paul Martin Sr.", to distinguish him from his son who's normally known as just "Paul Martin" — so regardless of whether Paul Martin père was ever officially "Paul Martin Sr." by law or not, it is the correct WP:COMMONNAME for him in actual usage.
