Deepening (and widening?) of harbour

edit

‘Congress approved an appropriation of $50,000 on March 1, 1869, to deepen the approaches to this harbor.’ But ‘[until 1898] the U.S. did not fortify Pearl Harbor as a naval base. The shallow entrance constituted a formidable barrier against the use of the deep protected waters of the inner harbor as it had for 60 years.’

Can you clarify the sequence of events by which the harbour was deepened/widened? Valetude (talk) 11:03, 24 October 2014 (UTC)Reply

Hawaiian word error according to my sister in Hawaii. I am also born and brought up there. The Hawaiian word for Pearl Water is given as Wainomi. But the word for pearl is momi. The word should be Waimomi-- Pearl Water.

If we should proceed with something more to confirm this change, please send the details.

Done I made the change - a quick Google search turned up a supporting ref at http://www.nps.gov/valr/historyculture/places.htm - which I also incorporated into the paragraph to support the change. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 20:48, 22 December 2014 (UTC)Reply

In section "Naval Presence (1899 - Present) Recommend to split paragraph after "...base on the island in 1899". What follows after is a separate discussion on the Japanese attack on Pearl harbor in 1941. Recommend to include a link to the more comprehensive page "Attack on Pearl Harbor" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attack_on_Pearl_Harbor )Streetcowboy (talk) 13:58, 12 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

I've tweaked the paragraphs. Also, there's already a link to the "attack" page in the opening paragraph at the top of the article. Stickee (talk) 01:15, 15 November 2015 (UTC)Reply

Please add under Post-World War II:

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will be visiting Pearl Harbor on December 26th with President Obama. This will be the first Japanese leader to visit and is to reciprocate Obama's visit to Hiroshima City in May.

"The two American commanders are now seeking to restore their reputations and full ranks."

edit

No they're not, both of them are dead and have been for 50-70 years by now. Surely this should be reworded to say "The family of the two American commanders" or "The supporters of..." Anything but wording that states that the commanders themselves are leading the charge from beyond the grave! 95.151.137.144 (talk) 09:40, 7 January 2017 (UTC)Reply

map context

edit

It would be nice if there was a map of hawaii or the island that pearl harbor is located on in this wiki article so one can see in context where it is located. It's hard to place where Pearl Harbor is visually. TonyMorris68 (talk) 14:40, 11 July 2017 (UTC)Reply

Long dead, demoted American commanders are now seeking to restore their full ranks

edit

Revision 648068288, dated 20 February 2015 inserted the claim that two American military commanders, Lt. Gen. Walter Short and Adm. Husband Kimmel were demoted of their full ranks, and are now seeking to restore their reputations and full ranks. A citation is provided to an issue of Christian Science Monitor from 1996, but it's presumably not available online, so I can't check it. In any case, the claim that Short, who died in 1949, and Kimmel, who died in 1968, are currently seeking to restore their ranks sounds extremely dubious. 125.255.248.10 (talk) 23:31, 15 August 2017 (UTC)Reply

Pearl Harbor, T.H.

edit

Pearl Harbor, T.H. was commonly used by the U.S. Military in World War II as an acronym for Pearl Harbor, Territory of Hawaii. Semper Fi! FieldMarine (talk) 18:22, 6 December 2020 (UTC)Reply

attack preparedness

edit

According to Callista L. Gingrich and Newt Gingrich, a war game simulated an attack on Pearl Harbor on February 7, 1932. This drill demonstrated the vulnerability of the U.S. fleet stationed there. Source: Gingrich, Callista L. & Newt Gingrich (2021) "Remembering the Lessons of Pearl Harbor," Lost Creek Guide, December 15, 2021, p. 14. Some of the comments in the article: "The fact is the surprise attack on Pearl Harbor . . . [in 1941] should not have been a surprise at all. We knew Pearl harbor was particularly vulnerable to attack -- especially on Sunday morning...." "The naval officials who oversaw the war game initially ruled . . . [the mock attack] a complete success -- and a total loss for the defenders of Pearl Harbor." Kdammers (talk) 17:13, 19 December 2021 (UTC)Reply

I find it very curious that there was

a) no link to the currently existing Naval installation PEARL HARBOR NAVAL COMPLEX or Naval Station Pearl Harbor (its last rename), which confusingly was its own page
b) nothing about environmental contamination. Wuerzele (talk) 15:41, 10 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

When hovering my mouse over the first picture in the set of three, top-right, the pointer changes to suggest it's a clickable link, and the 'animation' suggests the same, but it takes me nowhere. Since clicking on an image at Wikipedia normally takes you to at least information about the image or a larger one, I'm speculating there's a problem, but it needs someone with more editing knowledge than me to determine that and fix if required. Right-clicking and asking to view the picture gives this as the address: https://maps.wikimedia.org/img/osm-intl,10,a,a,270x200.png?lang=en&domain=en.wikipedia.org&title=Pearl_Harbor&revid=1231820455&groups=_adaa0e76309671cf64dab5c0b2a453ce6148c561
